My Interest in Lighthouse Photography
I have always been fascinated by lighthouses. Whenever a trip took us to the coast I would want to see the nearest lighthouse. The photograph here is one I took many years ago when we were visiting Maine.
I had seen lighthouses in ports around the world, but never really spent much time photographing them, until I retired at the end of 2006. When I retired I decided I would like to learn more about photography. My husband and I love to travel so lighthouses and photography seemed to be a good combination.
In the years since I have retired we have begun to plan many of our trips around photographing lighthouses. I have photographed lighthouses on the Atlantic coast and along the Great Lakes.
I am always looking for a new place to travel that involves lighthouses, so I am sure there will be many lenses to add to this in the future.

Biloxi, Mississippi Lighthouse

While traveling through Biloxi, Mississippi several years ago, we came across this lighthouse right on the median of the roadway.

Door County Lighthouses
One hot August, my husband and I decided to escape the Missouri heat and humidity, so we traveled to Wisconsin to discover the Door County peninsula.
At that time the only lighthouses I had seen had been on seacoast, so I was delighted to find some wonderful, and unusual looking lighthouses on Lake Michigan. It sometimes took us a bit of exploring to find them but it was a delightful experience. I was able to photograph quite a few interesting lights on this trip.
My First Florida Lighthouses
After my retirement in 2006, my husband and I decided to spend the month of March in Florida to watch baseball spring training. We stayed in Jupiter, Florida to follow the St. Louis Cardinals, and I was delighted to find they had a wonderful red lighthouse.
It was great staying an entire month in a town with a lighthouse. I could photograph the lighthouse at all times of day and capture the way it looked in the various lights and from different angles.
The second year we took a day trip down to Hillsboro Inlet so I could photograph a second lighthouse.

wonderful guide
I find it to be very helpful in learning about the lighthouses and deciding on which lighthouses to visit.
Michigan Lighthouses
In the fall of 2008 we took a trip to Michigan and I was able to photograph several of the lighthouses on Lake Michigan. It was exciting to see all the different types of lighthouses on the Great Lakes.
One of my favorite lighthouses was the one in Holland, Michigan. It is bright red and is a dutch archictectural style.

South Carolina and Georgia Lighthouses
In the fall of 2008 we took a trip to visit the lighthouses on the coast of Georgia and South Carolina. This trip proved to be very fruitful and I was able to photograph nine different lighthouses.
Each of these lighthouses were distinct, from the modern day lighthouse in Hilton Head to the bright white historic lighthouse off the Savannah river on Cockspur Island. It was interesting to visit these lights and hear each of their histories.
Florida Trip -2009
In 2009 we took a cruise prior to going to Jupiter so I was able to photograph the lighthouse in Nassau, Bahamas.
On the way back from Jupiter we stopped at two more Florida Lighthouses, St. Augustine and Ponce De Leon.
After we returned home I decided to make a lens featuring all of the Florida Lighthouses.

- Didn't do so well on the quiz but enjoyed the lighthouses on our trip to Maine. Say the one in Erie, PA and several on the Maine coastline. We stayed at a campground in Salem, MA and saw the one on Winter Island.

- I've only been to lighthouses on the West coast (the Mukilteo lighthouse is my favorite) but someday I'll have to tour all the ones you've made lenses about!
