Lighthouses are Fascinating
Some lighthouses are hard to get close enough for a good photo, while others may be surrounded with trees or in busy areas full of power lines and houses. Other lighthouses are right on the beach area or at the end of a pier and may be very accessible. When we are traveling we may try to photograph several lighthouses in a day so we have to watch our timing to capture the lighthouse in a good light. When time is an issue this is sometimes hard to do.
In this lens I will share images of some of my favorite photographs and tell you a bit about the lighting and angle of the photos. These photos have been made into Zazzle products and can be ordered in posters, prints and canvas prints in a variety of sizes. Finding the Perfect Shot
photographing lighthouses
I am always looking for just the right angle to take a photograph. I usually take a lot of shots before I find the angle that is just right.
I photographed this lighthouse at Hillsboro Inlet in Florida from a park just across the harbor, and was able to frame to photograph in palm branches.

This photo is the top of the lighthouse at Cana Island in Door County, Wisconsin. I walked over to the island to try to get a good photo but was finding a hard time getting the right shot. It was the end of a very dry summer and the grass and greenery around the lighthouse was really browned out so I looked for a way to avoid getting the surrounding area. I zoomed in through the trees to the top half of the lighthouse and this is the photo that I liked best.

As we were leaving the Bodie Island lighthouse we traveled down a wooded road and I looked back and caught this view of the lighthouse. I got out my telephoto lens and took this shot of the top of the lighthouse close up.

Maryland Lighthouses
lighthouse reflections
This first one is located at the Calvert Marine Museum in Solomons, Maryland. We stayed at a nearby motel, so I was able to visit the lighthouse several times and photograph it in a good light for capturing the reflection.

Drum Point Lighthouse by lighthouseenthusiast
Piney Point lighthouse is located on the Potomac river and was often used as a Presidential retreat in the early 1900's. The reflection on this one is a bit more subtle. There was a pond in front of the scene where new plants were starting to grow. I took the photo at about 8:30 in the morning and the light was still fairly good although not perfect.

Jupiter Inlet Lighthouse
Jupiter, Florida
This lighthouse is in Jupiter, Florida where we have visited each March for the past five years. I have been fortunate to be able to photograph this lighthouse from many angles and at various times of the day. This is one of my favorite shots. It has been enhanced with a painted filter in Photoshop to give it the feeling of a painting.

This lighthouse in Holland, Michigan is nicknamed "Big Red".

Here is another bright red lighthouse in Michigan. This one is in Muskegon and I photographed it in the fall of the year.

Photographer's Guide to Lighthouses
Lighthouses of the Outer Banks
North Carolina
The Outer Banks of North Carolina is a great place to photograph lighthouses. We spent a week down there and were able to photograph five different lighthouses.
This photograph of Bodie Island lighthouse captures the lighthouse in the early evening light. I love it when I am able to capture such perfect light for a photograph.

Cape Hatteras Lighthouse is perhaps the most well known lighthouse in the Outer Banks. This photograph was taken just after dark when the lamp is rotating. I was able to climb to a rooftop observation area at our hotel and took out my telephoto lens to take this shot of the lighthouse. I took several photos in quick succession to catch the light just as it turned toward me.

Ocracoke Island has a beautiful white lighthouse. This photo was taken in the early afternoon. It was a clear day and I took several photos till I got the clouds in just the position I wanted behind the lighthouse.

Roanoke Island has an unusual lighthouse that was moved to this location in the harbor. I photographed it in the beautiful early evening light. I photographed it about every 5-10 minutes over a 1 hour period and was able to get many shots of the dimming light and the colors in the sky behind the lighthouse.

This poster has all of the lighthouses that I photographed in the Outer Banks.

Peggy's Cove
Nova Scotia
In 2010 we went on a cruise to Nova Scotia and I was able to photograph several lighthouses. This lighthouse at Peggy's Cove is said to be the most photographed lighthouse in Canada. It was a very windy day when we visited.

Cape Florida Lighthouse
Key Biscayne
There is a great lighthouse in Key Biscayne, Florida. It is right on the beach and I was able to photograph it from both sides. It was early afternoon when I photographed it and I had to work with the sun and the clouds to get just the right shots. Here are photos of the lighthouse from both sides.
On the first shot, I am shooting into the sun so I waited till it went behind a cloud. You will note how different the sky looks on each shot even though they were taken moments apart.

- Yes, but it was hard to get a good angle on it. It seems you're always too far away or too close, or something's in the way. i appreciate your own personal photos on here. Angel blessed.

- I grew up in Ponce Inlet, FL. The lighthouse there looks very much like the Jupiter beach lighthouse. Very nice work!
