Who doesn't love the lonely sentry protecting those on the dangerous waters?

I love lighthouses. I love the idea behind their purpose. A handsome representation of safety and security. If you collect them, maybe you'll find some here to add to your collection.

Ludington Lighthouse in a Snow Storm February 2007

The oldest working lighthouse

Overlooking the North-Atlantic coast of Spain is the Tower of Hercules, the oldest working lighthouse in history. This lighthouse is almost 1900 years old and stands in A Coruña, Spain. This lighthouse has been in constant use since the 2nd century. There are references to this tower in written texts as early as 415AD! In 1788, King Carlos IV updated and reinforced the tower, which included the outer facade seen today. The Tower of Hercules is free and open to the public and is the National Monument of Spain.

Tallest lighthouses

The tallest brick lighthouse is the Lanterna at Genoa, built in 1543, which stands at 246 feet tall.
The worlds tallest lighthouse is the steel Marine Tower in Japan, standing at 324 feet high.

The Bell Rock Lighthouse

Standing about 12 miles off the coast of Angus, Scotland is the Bell Rock Lighthouse engineered by famous lighthouse architect, Robert Stevenson. This lighthouse is the oldest sea-washed lighthouse still standing today. Stevenson and his men began work on this industrial wonder of the world in 1807 with the lamp first being lit in 1811. The challenges of building a lighthouse so far from land were many, and there were numerous dangers, but Stevenson and his brave hired men never gave up. They stayed in a barracks of sorts built on stilts adjacent to the lighthouse site.
Sadly, in 1810 when work was nearly completed and Stevenson could happily entertain thoughts of going home to his beloved family, Stevenson lost his twins and youngest daughter to whooping cough.

The picture of the Bell Rock Lighthouse is originally by Derek Robertson. The image was retouched by Cactus.man

A lost lighthouse found

In 1881, a cast iron 25 foot lighthouse was erected near the Wellfleet, Massachusetts harbour, replacing an ineffective light anchored atop the roof of a brick house. In 1922, the lighthouse station was deactivated. Until this year, it was believed that the lighthouse was demolished, and that was the end if that.
It wasn't. It has been found painted a ghostly white and continuing it's job on a rocky Californian cliff nearly 3,000 miles away! Now called the Point Montera Light, documentation of the transfer has been found by lighthouse researchers digitally archiving historic photographs, and was reported by Colleen MacNeney, whose parents have photographed every lighthouse in the United States.

Why the Coast Guard would move the lighthouse so far from it origin is still a mystery.

Sign my guestbook please.

I don't need much, just a quick Hi!

Love the idea of this lens! I've lensrolled it to my 2 lenses that have lighthouse info on them:
Crescent City, California - Come Back Town USA &
Crescent City Video Showcase. Our St. George Reef lighthouse is known as the most expensive AND the most dangerous, and Battery Point is reported to be haunted, so this lens is a great addition to mine; I'm so happy to have found it! Thank you for visiting Heritage Heirloom Cutting Boards - that's how I found you.
