Cruising to Visit Lighthouses

I had heard about the interesting lighthouses in Nova Scotia and was anxious to photograph them. In the fall of 2010, a group of us went on a cruise that started in New York City and stopped at several ports in Nova Scotia as well as Prince Edward Island and Quebec City.

I knew it would be difficult to photograph lighthouses when I was at the mercy of the cruise ship and touring schedules, but I was hoping to catch a glimpse of a few. I signed up for a tour to Peggy's Cove lighthouse so I knew that at least I would be able to capture some images of that highly photographed lighthouse. I was happily surprised when I was able to photograph several other lighthouses as the cruise ship stopped at the various harbours in Nova Scotia. I learned that Nova Scotia has more lighthouses than any other province in Canada. 170 lighthouses dot the shores of Nova Scotia. I was able to photograph 6 of them on my cruise.

Prince Edward Island has 50 lighthouses and I was able to photograph 4 of them. I found the shapes of many of the lighthouses to be quite unique (or at least different from those I was used to on the eastern coast of the USA).

This lens will serve as my introduction to the lighthouses in Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island. I hope you enjoy my photographs and my musings on my lighthouse visits.

Halifax Harbour

Lighthouses

I took this photo of one of the lighthouses in Halifax Harbour at dusk as the cruise ship was leaving the harbour. The lighthouse is on McNab's island.

Nova Scotia Lighthouses

This photo was taken of a lighthouse near Baddeck on Kidston Island. Baddeck is the county seat and is a popular tourist destination because of the museum of Alexander Graham Bell. Alexander Graham Bell traveled to the area in 1885 and fell in love with it. He and his wife built two homes on their estate near Baddeck. Alexander Graham Bell spent the last 30 years of his life at the estate and died their in 1922.

Peggy's Cove in Nova Scotia

famous lighthouse

I had read a lot about Peggy's cove and I was really excited to be able to photograph the lighthouse. I was hoping for good weather and I was not disappointed. The bright blue sky with white fluffy clouds made a beautiful backdrop for my photographs of the lighthouse. It was a very windy day and even the rough look to the sea added to the photos.

Arriving in Prince Edward Island

Canadian lighthouse

Prince Edward Island is famous for it's red dirt roads and for the book Anne of Green Gables, so I was excited when I found out it would be a stop on our cruise. I was really excited when I found out that there are more than 50 lighthouses on the island.

This photo was taken as the cruise ship was entering the harbor for Charlottetown in Prince Edward Island

Once the cruise ship was docked I was able to photograph this small lighthouse in the harbor in Charlottetown.

This lighthouse was a stop on our tour of Prince Edward Island. I was able to get out and climb to the top of this rather small lighthouse. It is located in Victoria harbour. Very interesting!

This photo was taken on another stop on our tour of Prince Edward Island. I didn't get the name of this lighthouse but it was right next to a very large bridge. We were able to walk around the lighthouse but it was not open to go inside.

This photograph was taken in the early evening as the cruise ship was leaving Prince Edward Island. I was able to capture the beautiful colors in the sky and you will note the lighthouse with it's light beaming on the shore.

I'm so glad you made it to PEI - a very special place. Ive spent a few summer vacations there and it is always great. You can see the French meets English aspect when you see the names of the people who live there, although its mostly English. Right next door, New Brunswick (with the world's higest tides in the world) is Canada's only officially bilingual province.
