Being a Greek Orthodox and more inclined and familiar to Orthodox icon painting, I cannot but admire and be grateful to all knowledge that comes to me about non Orthodox Christian paintings. By that I mean the symbolic elements and expressive means of the artists that depicted our Lord's life and teaching.
I would like to notice something, though about this painting. The sad look on Jesus face, due to seeing such a devastated place, is acceptable, but God's face- as I perceive it- should not look desperate. Therefere, in my opinion, there is a very subjective element on the painting. Woe to us, humans, if even God despaired with our condition. Please correct me if my perception of the painting is wrong.

What a lovely lens! This picture was on the wall at my Sunday School ( back in the 1950s!) and I've always loved it! Thank you for your comments on my Wordsworth's Lake District lens

Thank you taking the time to add a comment.

I don't know that I can offer any more on this painting but there are other fine paintings by William Holman-Hunt and much that could be written about the Pre-Raphaelites. I'll see what I can do.[in reply to kiwisoutback]

Amazing artwork, you've done a great job. Any chance we can see even more on this painting, or other works by the artist? Nicely presented, Squid Angel blessed!
