Lights, Camera, Fashion!: How to Dress Like Your Favorite Movie Character

Ranked #5,353 in Fashion & Beauty, #80,552 overall

Who do you want to be today?

Feeling a little Legally Blonde? How about a feisty Mrs. Smith? Or a cool band aide like Penny Lane? Live vicariously through fashion, and steal the style of your favorite movie characters. I'm going to give you some ideas on how to translate their fashion into real life, using most of the pieces that you already have in your closet.

Reese Witherspoon in Legally Blonde

Just think pink

My serious suggestion is to dress up like you just stepped out of the set of Legally Blonde every Monday, because it's just so difficult to feel cranky in an all pink ensemble. Anyway, Elle's (Reese Witherspoon) style can be summed up as very girly, not light on the accessories, and capital fun.

Here's a list of what you'll need to put the Legally Blonde look together.

    Apparel:
  • Pink wrap dress. I've always had a soft spot for that wrap dress she wore at the pivotal case scene, where she won the case with her knowledge on perms.

  • Pencil skirts. Elle wore a lot of oink pencil skirts throughout the entire movie. Break it down by wearing classic button-down white tops or a gray turtle neck, instead of full on pink.

  • Accessories:
  • Pink backpack. A petite and cute one would be ideal.
  • .
  • Italian charm bracelet. Unlike traditional charm bracelets with charm bracelets charms jangling away, Italian charm bracelets are clasps together.

  • Shoes:
  • Peep toe pumps. To show off your pink pedicure of course.

Angelina Jolie in Mr. & Mrs. Smith

Hot Stuff

Angelina Jolie's Mrs. Smith was all kinds of sexy. She was an in control wife, a no nonsense boss and a kickass spy but all ere dripping with different kinds of sex appeal. When she was being the perfect Stefford wife, she had on body conscious knit tops and mid-length skirts that cinch her waist, when at the office she wore black turtle necks and when she's on spy mode, she's suiting up. I think her memorable outfit in the movie was at the final fight scene, when she wore a power suit and vintage sunglasses. Here's what you need to turn into Mrs. Smith.

    Apparel:
  • White tops. A crisp one white one to wear with the suit.

  • Suit. A well-tailored one. You don't want be looking dowdy in your husband/boyfriend's suit now.

  • Accessories:
  • Vintage Sunglasses. The aviators are the best ones.

  • Garter. Well, what else for but to hide your knives in. Refer to tango scene.

  • Shoes
  • Low Heel Boots. For when you're kicking major spy butt

  • Killer Heels.. When you're undercover.

This is probably the first Angelina Jolie movie I ever saw, rented it out at the video store. VHS was the bomb back then.
Gia
In an interview Angelina Jolie mentioned that she fell in love with her co-star in the film, which lead to speculations about her sexuality. But if I base it on her Actor's Studio interview, she's very nonchalant about it.
Girl Interrupted
Where she won an Academy Award and again caused another controversy in her speech, where people thought she was IN love with her brother.
Lara Croft: Tomb Raider
The movie that catapulted her to international fame. This is also the movie she says that changed her life, because she met her adopted kid Max.
Gone in Sixty Seconds
She was the baddest chick who knew how to drive during those days. And then Michelle Rodriguez came along in Fast and the Furious. Also I think this is the only time I liked her blonde.

Kate Hudson in Almost Famous

Flower Power

I can't think of anyone else to play the cool and fun Penny Lane in Almost Famous than Kate Hudson. The fashion was amazing as well, it was rock and roll in the 70s after all. Just take note that really all you need is a devil may care attitude and you're already band aide Penny Lane. To recreate her famous look, here's what you'll need.

    Apparel
  • Tunic Tops. Rule is your top has to be flowy. If not tunic tops you can also use peasant blouses.

  • Wide Leg Trousers. Denim bell bottoms or corduroys are the best trousers you can have.

  • Fur Coat. I think the most memorable look in the film was that coat with fur trimmings. Make sure it's faux fur though. It's not cool to use real fur.

  • Accessories
  • Vintage Sunglasses. Think Yoko Ono and Janis Joplin. Aviators, round frames.

  • Necklaces. Pile on the necklaces, and throw in every other accessory you have. It's about layering when it comes to accessories.

  • Shoes
  • Wedge sandals. Perfect when wearing those wide leg trousers. Explore flat-forms as well.

Drew Barrymore in The Wedding Singer

Back to the 80s

I share everyone's opinion of just forgetting the 80s ever happened when it comes to fashion, but Drew Barrymore's character in romantic comedy The Wedding Singer made the 80s look really good. Her character Julia was sweet, innocent and naive bordering on stupid for almost marrying a douchebag, which is much the opposite of Drew's real life wild child and free spirit attitude. In the movie, although she didn't go over the top 80s crazy with her clothes, she did wear a lot of prints which was a signature way back then. One outfit that particularly stood out for me was when she got drunk at a bar and Adam Sandler's character found out that her fiance was cheating on her.

    Apparel
  • Button down dress. She wore a lot of dresses in this movie, most of them button down and pink.

  • Cardigans. Yellow cardigan, floral cardigan, plain cardigan, she had it in this movie.

  • Accessories
  • Necklace with large pendant. She was always wearing this necklace with the large blue gem pendant that goes up to her collar bone in the movie. It adds more femininity to the look she already has as it accentuates a woman's neck and collar bones.

  • Shoes
  • Low Heel Boots. Doc Marten's preferably.

Zhang Ziyi in Memoirs of a Geisha

Turning Japanese

There were a lot of controversies surrounding this film with Chinese actors playing Japanese icons, the Chinese government banned the film from being shown in their country. But no amount of political meddling can change the fact that the clothes and accessories in this film was spectacular.

    Apparel:
  • Kimono Jacket.
  • A full Geisha's outfit costs a fortune,, and you can't walk around the streets wearing that. So instead how about this kimono inspired jacket from Nicole Richie's Winter Kate? Depending on your mood, it can be Japanese-inspired to flower child-inspired in no time.
    Cosmetics
  • Matte red lipstick.
  • Geisha's wear red lipstick as an accent to their white painted faces. One lip with red lipstick means they're still in training, while both lips mean that they're senior geishas.
    Shoes
  • Wedge sandals.
  • Geisha's wear really high slippers, recreate them by wearing wedge flip flops if you're just going on a casual event or with wedge sandals or flat-forms. But if you wanna go crazy, how about Noritaka Tatehana's Night Makers?

Julia Roberts in Erin Brockovich

Va-va-voom

My, my, my, was Julia sexing it up in this movie or what? As America's Sweetheart people rarely see her playing the straight talking unemployed single mother of three who goes after a large gas and electric company to save a town. As it is based on a true story, Julia wore what the real life Erin Brockovich in real life which are body conscious dresses, extremely mini skirts, plunging necklines and big hair. You don't have to go as far as looking like you came out of Pretty Woman instead of Erin Brockovich, so we're just going to take some elements from Julias's look and mix it up with other things that you already have in your closet.

    Apparel:
  • Tank tops.
  • It seams like the really tight ones with the low neckline are preferred.
  • Mini skirts.
  • I remember an interview of Julia Roberts saying that the skirts she wore on the movie were actually longer than the ones Erin wore in real life. Now that's mini. But if you're uncomfortable with the length (or should I say lack thereof) put some tights underneath.
    Accessories:
  • Belts.
  • Julia wore a lot of statement belts in the movie which accentuates her already tiny waist even more, adding to the sexiness of her outfits.
  • Hoop earrings. Nothing too complicated, requirement is its just has to be big.

  • Shoes:
  • Heels. She strutted them curves in those high heels.

Natalie Portman in Closer

Feisty Yet Girly

It's one of those films when you ask a girl and a boy what they remember about it, they'll most likely say completely different things. Ask a girl and she'll probably recite all the heart-wrenching dialogue down to the last syllable, but ask a guy and they'll probably say Natalie Portman's stripper scene with Clive Owen. Not that they particularly listened to the dialogue or anything.

Fashion wise, Natalie Portman's character Alice started out as a bubbly girl and then eventually became a feisty woman and in the end went full circle. There are very interesting pieces that Natalie wore in the movie, but what she wore in the end is what stood out the most for me.

    Apparel
  • White tank top. The tank top she wore at the end was the classic tank top, just very simple. You can add your own style by choosing some with embellishments or a different fabric.

  • Blue skinny jeans. Very classic blue jeans.

  • Accessories:
  • Chandelier Earrings. This is probably the largest piece in the whole look. You can choose to go with the color scheme or deviate from it by choosing a chandelier earring with lots of colors or gems.

  • necklace with single pendant. The chain is very dainty also as well as the pendant. Nothing too overpowering, because it'll clash with the size of the chandelier earrings.

  • Shoes:
  • Wedge Sandals. The shoes were not shown, so I'm just going to suggest an espadrilles wedge sandals, given that the weather in the video is also very New York summer.

Alicia Silverstone Clueless

As if!

No top movie lists about fashion - then, now or ever - will be complete without Clueless in it. It hyperstylized the look of the 90s with all the cliques at school determined by how they dress. I can say that one of the most unforgettable scenes in the movie was Cher's (Alicia Silverstone) electronic closet with the computer that does the matching for you. But since I couldn't really do that to my own closet, I opted to copy the pom pom pens that she had instead.

    Apparel
  • Plaid. Anything plaid is good. It was the 90s after all. There was a scene when Cher and her best friend Dionne were walking down the hall wearing matching plaid skirts, vest and blazer.

  • Cardigans. For a day look, instead of a blazer use cardigans as a substitute.

  • Shoes
  • Mary Jane Pumps. To complete the school girl look pair your clothes with Mary Jane pumps. Alicia was wearing a white Mary Jane pump with a pearl finish in one of the scenes where she was trying to seduce Christian.

  • Accessories
  • Knee-high Socks. Don't just stick to white or black, try it in gray or even printed. It will tie the whole look together, trust me.
