Irish Memoirs for Your Reading Enjoyment

I loved Angela's Ashes and it started me on a reading binge. I'm still tracking down memoirs to read about Ireland. Each is unique in its voice and memories, and evoke different periods, places and experiences of Ireland. That's what I'm seeking, the feel of that country that my ancestors left several hundred years ago. Irish roots run deep.

The Irish are natural storytellers, so these biographies are quite readable even if you don't feel the tug of ancestral memories. I've applied my librarian skills to finding a wide range of titles for readers who read Angela's Ashes and now want more.

The Pulitzer Prize Winning Book by Frank McCourt

Angela's Ashes

What shines as a beacon through the dark cloud of poverty and depression described in the book is McCourt's matter-of-fact will to survive, and to find humour and grace in an otherwise abject existence. The book really made me both laugh and cry at the same time, and stands as a masterpiece in combining both humour and misery... buy it for its unsurpassed language - McCourt has produced the definitive story told in an Irish accent. 'Tis a fantastic read indeed... (review by Mandy S. Lee)

Did You Find a Title That You Want to Read?

I came to this lens fulfilling the requirement for the National Library Week quest to find a lens about one of our favorite books. Since you were a librarian this is a perfect choice. Angela's Ashes was one of the most moving books I have ever read, I woke up reading it, took it to the bathroom with me and fell asleep with the book falling on my face. It was gripping, transfixing. After I heard the video with Frank McCourt that you found for us, I had some realization of why they is - he speaks with such an authentic voice. Thanks for bringing these books to us, I have bookmarked this for further reading, and given it a very nice Angel Blessing.

    Ginger,
No, I did not know the younger brother also wrote. I read the Monk Swimming, 'tis and Teacher Man, of course, AA's. Which of the brothers were published first? I was so sad about Frank's passing. I wanted to be able to read more of his writings. Even a two page article by him in a magazine impressed me. Very attractive page.

Angela's Ashes came first, then the brothers wrote their books. The Irish are great storytellers, aren't they!
