Lil' Maths Poems (ah one for you, ah two for me, three for you, ah 5 squillion triquillion for me, WOHAHAAAAAA.)
Writing maths poems can be a fun way for kids to get friendly with the subject (adults too!).
It doesn't even have to be a maths poem, it can be a maths story, a maths song, a maths painting (for e.g., encouraging a child to paint the number 8 in eight colours or shapes), or even a MATHS PLAY! (e.g., each person could play the role of a mathematical symbol. Miss Addition likes counting pennies, while Mr Minus likes giving his pencils away).

A short maths poem I baked earlier...
A right angle is not an angel, that much I sure can tell
The corner of a right angle
reminds me of an 'L'.
Maths poems can beeeee...
...short, long, written in a circle, triangle, deep fried, sauteed, written about vaguely or deeply, or even on a piece of paper and stuck on the back of a calculator. There once was a figure called 8
Number 9 she did want to date
She sat on a tree
She thought it was 3
Oh what will become of her fate?
Writing math poems encourages kids to give maths a personality...
... enables them to add body to it, personify it, have fun with it, so that when they look at the subject, they feel their own individual connection to it, because they have indeed created their own version of it, no matter how loose or exact.I gave the shopkeeper a pound,
he gave me a fiver
I said: er, excuse me sir,
are you out of your minda?
A pound too many
you've given me,
why, four to be precise,
it's even one more
than three blind mice
So, I'll give you back the fiver,
you give me 50 pence
I only bought a chocolate bar,
you know it makes sense.
(*pound refers to the UK currency, not metric weight. For anyone who doesn't know (which is OK - we all have to learn, right?), a fiver is slang for five British pounds.)
For those that might fear maths, writing maths poems might mean the subject doesn't seem quite as scary afterwards.
And for those who like maths, hey, the sky's the limitty limit!
Some maths poems I came across...
...yes, I know I use 'math' and 'maths' interchangeably. Geminis rule, so there. Mangoes too. Mangoes and Geminis rule. Mangoes, Math/s and Geminis. And Marmalade.
Ahem... where was I?
Ah, yes, some maths poems I came across:

Don't be shy. / OK. Be shy, then. See if I care. :-(
OK, I do care :-). In fact, I care to the 7th power of 10. But, shhh, don't tell you I just told you that.

- This is a really cute lens. It kind of reminds me of when I learned to multiple: "Six and Seven went to the zoo...when they came back they were 42" "Six and eight went on a date...when they came back they were 48" "Six times seven fell on the floor...when I picked them up they were 64" (Sad thing is sometimes I still use the rhymes and I am 27! )
