Lil'Red Panda Babies
How lucky for me while researching baby pandas for my Get Cracking lens of the day (theme - cute and cuddly) to find that there are also red pandas. How adorable are these babies. "Cute and Cuddly"--Right?
PINT SIZE RED PANDAS
Since I live in San Diego County, when I started to research baby pandas for my lens of the day today, I naturally thought of the wonderful zoo we have in Balboa Park in San Diego. I remembered when we went to the SD Zoo to see our panda cubs when they were on view to the public. Black and white adorable cubs who were oblivious to all the people oooing and aaaaahing over their antics. But when I looked deeper in the San Diego Zoo website, not only did I see that they have a live web cam of the pandas. (YEAH!). Knowing that there are so few remaining red pandas and they are endangered makes this information and these pictures that much more special.
Pint-size red pandas
Red pandas happen to be solitary animals, except during the breeding season, which takes place from January through April, or when the mother and her cubs are together, usually for a year after birth. Like the giant panda, the red panda female is fertile for only one or two days a year. The young are born with thick buff and gray fur and with their eyes and ears tightly closed. The red panda mother shelters her young in tree hollows and regularly moves them to new dens, carrying her offspring in her mouth. The babies usually begin opening their eyes and ears at about two to three weeks of age. When hungry, the newborns get their mother's attention with high-pitched whistles.
The soles of the newborn's feet are bare, but as an adult its feet will be covered with hair to help the red panda climb on wet, slippery branches and walk on icy rocks or snow-covered ground. As the baby grows, its short, fat tail will become beautifully ringed and will grow to be almost as long as its body. This long tail helps the animal keep its balance in the trees. Young red pandas stay in the den for about three months before venturing out. By five months of age they are almost as large as their mother. They mature in 18 to 20 months and are driven away by their mother at that time so she can get ready to raise her next litter. Males rarely help with raising the young.
Meet Pemba, a 4-month old red panda
Recently made his public debut at Sydney, Australia's Taronga Zoo
Red pandas are endangered; Pemba is the 44th born at the Taronga Zoo since it began a breeding program for the species, a relative of both the giant panda and the raccoon.
"Pemba's favorite food is grapes, which he sometimes takes right from our fingertips, a testament to the level of trust and the strong bond we have developed with him and his protective mother," zookeeper Megan Lewis said of the baby, who's considered especially large for his age. (During his mother Wanmei's pregnancy, keepers thought she was carrying two cubs.) As an adult, he'll likely weigh about 12 to 20 pounds.
Red pandas are native to Nepal ("Pemba" means "Saturday" in Nepalese), Myanmar and China, where their habitat is shrinking as a result of deforestation.

Baby Pandas Meet Potential New Mom
Abandoned at Birth
IT'S a dog's life for these two super cute panda pups - after they were adopted by a POOCH.
The rare red pandas were abandoned by their mum at birth at a zoo in northern China. But thanks to the milk and loving care they've had from a local farm dog they're now thriving.
The cubs were born on June 25 and immediately left on their own after their mum gave birth in front of a crowd of visitors. Zoo employee Ha Guojiang said: "No one knew she was pregnant. "Her plump body and bushy hair disguised her protruding belly until the babies were born. We hurriedly went about to find a wet nurse for them."
The new mummy mutt, belonging to a farmer from a nearby suburb, is raising the two panda cubs as its own, sometimes even refusing to feed its little pup, said Mr Guojiang. At three-weeks-old, the baby cubs have yet to open their eyes and have doubled in length to eight inches.
Unlike the more well-known, bear-like giant pandas, red pandas resemble raccoons with long bushy tails. There are believed to be fewer than 2,500 adult red pandas in the world.

Red Panda Grown Up
Because of the size of the red panda, even the adults are cute. Let's take a deeper look into the adult years of the red panda and there is no one better to help you with learning about things like this than the National Geographic. You also can't find much better pictures than you can find on their site. The photo here is by Mark W. Moffett
Here is what they tell us about the Red Panda:
## The red panda is dwarfed by the black-and-white giant that shares its name. These pandas typically grow to the size of a house cat, though their big, bushy tails add an additional 18 inches (46 centimeters). The pandas use their ringed tails as wraparound blankets in the chilly mountain heights.
## The red panda shares the giant panda's rainy, high-altitude forest habitat, but has a wider range. Red pandas live in the mountains of Nepal and northern Myanmar (Burma), as well as in central China.
## These animals spend most of their lives in trees and even sleep aloft. When foraging, they are most active at night as well as in the gloaming hours of dusk and dawn.
## Red pandas have a taste for bamboo but, unlike their larger relatives, they eat many other foods as well-fruit, acorns, roots, and eggs. Like giant pandas, they have an extended wrist bone that functions almost like a thumb and greatly aids their grip.
##They are shy and solitary except when mating. Females give birth in the spring and summer, typically to one to four young. Young red pandas remain in their nests for about 90 days, during which time their mother cares for them. (Males take little or no interest in their offspring.)
## The red panda has given scientists taxonomic fits. It has been classified as a relative of the giant panda, and also of the raccoon, with which it shares a ringed tail. Currently, red pandas are considered members of their own unique family-the Ailuridae.
## Red pandas are endangered, victims of deforestation. Their natural space is shrinking as more and more forests are destroyed by logging and the spread of agriculture.

Little Red Panda - Julong
Residing at the San Diego Zoo
"Across the street from our much beloved giant pandas we have another panda I'd like to introduce: our little red panda, Julong. Red pandas are endemic to the Himalayas, Southern China, India, Nepal, and Burma. They are mostly solitary but sometimes live in small family groups. They have beautiful soft, reddish brown fur, white faces with red tear markings, and a distinct long, bushy tail with six alternating red and yellow rings. Along with habitat fragmentation, the red panda's tail has led to its current endangered status. Although they are protected in all countries in which they live, in southwest China they are hunted specifically for their tails, thought to be good-luck charms for newlywed couples.Julong is a western red panda, and although the name may appear that they are related to giant pandas, the two subspecies of red pandas, western and the larger Styan's red panda, are actually in their own family, Ailuridae, and are distantly related to raccoons, weasels, and skunks.
Red pandas are mostly herbivorous, with a diet consisting of about two thirds bamboo. They also eat some berries, fruit, roots, grasses, and occasionally eggs and small rodents. At the San Diego Zoo, we feed Julong fresh bamboo daily, along with specially formulated biscuits and, on occasion, fresh apple pieces or his favorite, grapes.
If you visit Julong, you'll notice he spends most of his time on a bamboo shelf in the upper level of his exhibit. Red pandas live mainly in the trees and are quite adept at climbing. Since they are crepuscular, active mostly at dawn and dusk, their long body, short legs, and bushy tails help balance them while they snooze the day away and search for food at night. Living the twilight years of his life (red pandas can live to be 15), Julong does a bit more snoozing than cruising nowadays, although he always perks up when he hears his keepers come by for a visit. Who knows, he may just get another grape for his efforts!
So next time you visit our Giant Panda Research Station, stroll across the street and say hello to Julong. Don't worry: even if he sleeps right through your visit, there's still nothing cuter than our little red panda."
