HERE'S WHAT I THINK

LIMBURGER Cheese is Yummy!

I absolutely LOVE the taste of Limburger Cheese. Yes, it is YUMMY and delicious with a slice of onion on a fresh piece of rye bread. I've been loving this pungent cheese since I was a wee one in Northeastern Ohio. It seems though that everytime I've opened a package of Limburger, the men in my life ALL seem to think I've 'cut the cheese!' And, not in the sense of removing the rind. 'What stinks so much!' is their usual response. You see, they think it's stinky cheese and refuse to eat it!

Well, I happen to think there are plenty of Squidooers and Monkeybrains out there who agree with me that this is YUMMY cheese and NOT STINKY cheese! Are you one of them?

Look at that Limburger cheese -- yummy!

What is Limburger cheese?

Limburger cheese originated in Limburg, which is now divided between modern-day Netherlands, Belgium, and Germany. Limburger is especially known for its pungent odor. The bacterium used to ferment Limburger cheese and other rind-washed cheeses is Brevibacterium linens; this same bacterium is found on human skin and is partially responsible for human body odor. pp 51-63, "Cheese"

The Herve cheese is a particular kind of Limburger cheese produced in the Land of Herve.

Limburger cheese and its characteristic odor are a frequent butt of jokes and gags. In 2006 a study showing that the malaria mosquito (Anopheles gambiae) is attracted equally to the smell of Limburger cheese and to the smell of human feet earned the Ig Nobel Prize in the area of biology. Despite its birth location, most of the Limburger cheese made today comes from Germany, and has since about the 19th century. It was first produced by Rudolph Benkerts in 1867 in his cellar from pasteurized goat's milk. [http://whatscookingamerica.net/History/LimburgerCheese.htm] A few years later, there were about 25 factories that produced this cheese. The Chalet Cheese Cooperative, located in Monroe, Wisconsin, is the one company which makes this cheese in the United States.http://www.wisdairy.com/BuyWICheese/companydetail.aspx?companyid=52#

YOUR TURN!

Ah, I do believe that one man's STINKY is another man's YUMMY -- or vice versa. What do YOU think?

Thanks everyone for participating in this yummy but possibly a little stinky debate! I love all the great comments. Me personally, well ... I was just at the Fresh Market thinking about what 'cheese' to put in that basket for mom. Hmmm, now I wonder if I should have grabbed that limburger???

chefkeem says:

When we were kids, my sisters and I had to endure my father's passion for stinky cheeses at the dinner table. It took me some 20 years to get over my Limburger phobia, but now I just love it. The creaminess and complex taste is unsurpassed among fine cheeses from around the world. I just hold my breath before putting it into my mouth :)

I was raised around Limburger cheese and love it. I went to a holiday dinner at my In-laws and brought a block of it. My sister-in-law opened it and ate 3 or 4 crackers with it. My oldest daughter seen her eating it and said "How can you eat that" and my sister-in-law said "What, It is pretty good." Then my daughter said "Yes, BUT IT STINKS" My sister-in-law took one wiff of the cheese and turned green and got vilently ill. I don't know how she missed the aroma, but she did.
