HERE'S WHAT I THINK

LIMBURGER Cheese is Yummy!

I absolutely LOVE the taste of Limburger Cheese. Yes, it is YUMMY and delicious with a slice of onion on a fresh piece of rye bread. I've been loving this pungent cheese since I was a wee one in Northeastern Ohio. It seems though that everytime I've opened a package of Limburger, the men in my life ALL seem to think I've 'cut the cheese!' And, not in the sense of removing the rind. 'What stinks so much!' is their usual response. You see, they think it's stinky cheese and refuse to eat it!

Well, I happen to think there are plenty of Squidooers and Monkeybrains out there who agree with me that this is YUMMY cheese and NOT STINKY cheese! Are you one of them?

Look at that Limburger cheese -- yummy!

What is Limburger cheese?

Limburger cheese is a cheese that originated in the historical Duchy of Limburg, which is now divided between modern-day Netherlands, Belgium, and Germany. Limburger is especially known for its pungent odor. The bacterium used to ferment Limburger cheese and other rind-washed cheeses is Brevibacterium linens; this same bacterium is found on human skin and is partially responsible for human body odor. pp 51-63, "Cheese"

Herve cheese is a particular kind of Limburger cheese produced in the municipality of Herve.

Limburger cheese and its characteristic odor are a frequent butt of jokes and gags. In 2006 a study showing that the malaria mosquito (Anopheles gambiae) is attracted equally to the smell of Limburger cheese and to the smell of human feet earned the Ig Nobel Prize in the area of biology. Despite its birth location, most of the Limburger cheese made today comes from Germany, and has been since about the nineteenth century. It was first produced by Rudolph Benkerts in 1867 in his cellar from pasteurized goat's milk. [http://whatscookingamerica.net/History/LimburgerCheese.htm] A few years later, there were about 25 factories that produced this cheese. The Chalet Cheese Cooperative, located in Monroe, Wisconsin, is the one company which makes this cheese in North America.http://www.wisdairy.com/BuyWICheese/companydetail.aspx?companyid=52#

YOUR TURN!

Ah, I do believe that one man's STINKY is another man's YUMMY -- or vice versa. What do YOU think?

I love limburger cheese. I was brought up eating it on Long Island. It all started with my grandfather who worked in the financial district (NYC). On his way home from work he'd pick up a stinky limburger -expose to all those on the subway - and bring it home to enjoy with a piece of rye bread and a beer. This simple munchie is a favorite of my father and now me. My boyfriend thinks I'm insane to eat it and refuses to let me buy it unless he's on business for a few weeks hahaha!

Mona says:

Limburger cheese is the best cheese is the world. I love it!!!

Bill says:

Nothing better than buttered toasted dark bread slathered with sweet hot mustard, limburger, and Walla Walla onion. Pop in the microwavee briefly until the cheese melts. Heavenly. Unfortunately, limburger is not carried in most groceries in western WA.

Oosquid says:

Yum,Yum,Yummy! OK it is a little stinky, but so what.

GothicGroucho says:

It stinks to high heaven but tastes good. A true paradox.

No way, Monkeybrain! It's stinky!

bobo says:

No Way it smells like dirty feet and taste worse. YUCK!
I dont know why anyone would buy that as apposed to somthing
alot cheaper like cheddar or mozzerella, that actually
taste like its supposed to be eaten.

ElizabethJeanAllen says:

I like cheese but Limburger is one I can't stomach. The smell gets to me long before I have a chance to eat it.
