Limited Pie Fallacy

Ranked #15,364 in Education, #299,538 overall

There is enough to go around.

The idea exists that there is a limited supply of money in the world. Along with this idea comes cries that we must redistribute these limited resources to create equality. This train of thought is shortsighted and fails to consider the evidence to the contrary. Wealth can be created, and does not have to be seized and redistributed. If you create an economy of growth more jobs are created along with commodities. Money is created by the government as a place holder for commodities, so individuals can exchange goods with out bartering. That is to say their need not be a coincidence of needs. Money may be limited in a country that is the number of place holding marker (coins or notes), but wealth is not. Commodities can be created and and there for wealth. Any one that will work to produce a needed commodity can produce wealth.

The limited pie fallacy is used by socialist and communists to fuel class warfare. This allows them to under mind the control that the wealthy often exercise. It is a lie fed to the masses to incite a feeling of entitlement. It plays on the greed and fears of people. It feeds them the lie that they will not get enough if they do not seize it violently or through taxation, rather than focusing their energy on producing their own wealth.

If people will work they can create their own destiny. That is what made America great. The constitution creates a framework in which a man can build a future for himself and his family. It is supposed to protect the wealth an individual earns. Slowly in the united states a feeling of entitlement has been built up with the lies that there is a limited amount of pie that needs to be seized and distributed. A man needs bread, but does not live by bread alone. A man must have a sense of accomplishment to have purpose. To have accomplishment he needs work. To have work he needs only find what his neighbor wants and find a way to get it for him, whether by producing it or securing it. This is how an economy works.

Some people are incapable of providing for themselves, and a safety net should exist for these people. Sadly though many feel they fall into this group who are actually quite capable, only lazy. Entitlement programs that are poorly monitored as they are in the USA only feed the problem and the misconception that there is not enough.

My Pie

Rei at en.wikipediaWhat I earn, create, build, or secure through legal methods belongs to me. The government exists to protect individual property rights. Along with the misconception about there not being enough, aka the limited pie fallacy, comes the idea that what we produce is not ours, but the property of the collective. Therefore it is up to the government to decide what we can keep, and what will be redistributed to others who need it. This allows those who would seize yours or my own property to justify their actions.

I am quite able and willing to help others, but I can decide better than the government how to do that. The inherent waist that comes from government bureaucracy will immediately decrease the value of any money seized to be redistributed. If that same dollar is left in my hands or the hands or any number of generous people we can more efficiently distribute it to the needy, and into the economy. Government is a vehicle of waist.

The fact that there are still individuals in need rarely reflects the greed of individuals or a lack of desire to give. More often it reflects corruption in government. Corrupt governments such as ones often seen in Africa are responsible for much more suffering than individuals who are working hard to create wealth.

So spread the word. There is enough. When you create a dollar you can do more good keeping it to help your neighbor, or spending it to propel the economic engine of our nations and world. Wealth can be created from raw materials and services and is not created through government redistribution. If that were the case then we should all quit our jobs and go on government assistance. It is hard work that will put bread on your table not magic from the government. If you want that bread to keep coming, then get out and find a way to create your own piece of pie.

What Made America Great and Can Again

The knowledge that you can wake up and build a future for yourself and your children was what brought people flocking to America and still does. Sadly this dream is being killed slowly through regulation and taxation. If the United States Government and people want to remain the great nation that we have become we need to go back to the basics. We need to make people accountable for their own destiny. We cannot have one percent of the country paying half of the bill as we currently do. If we will let people work, keep what they earn, and provide and environment for growth there will be no way to hold the progress back. New businesses will open and unemployment will cease to be an issue. The American dream is for a better tomorrow. Not one that is dropped into our lap, but one that we have worked for and are allowed to keep rather than have it pillaged from our pockets by big government.
