Abraham Lincoln on Stamps
This lens highlights stamps (mostly U.S.) related to Abraham Lincoln and the history they depict.
About this stamp: In January 1909, Rep. Albert F. Dawson of Iowa introduced a joint resolution for a set of Lincoln stamps to commemorate the centennial anniversary of Lincoln's birth. Because of the time constraint (the birthday being just a month away), Dawson's proposal was pared down to a single Lincoln postage stamp of a 2 cent denomination. Bureau of Engraving and Printing artist C. A. Huston worked on the design, taking the frame of the then current 2-cent stamp, adding a drawing of ribbons and a centennial inscription, and the inserted a photograph of a plaster cast made by Augustus Saint-Gaudens. It was not to go on sale before February 12, 1909, but many post offices released them before that time so earlier post marks are known to exist. Scott 368.

20 Cent Nation of Readers
Abraham Lincoln and His Son Tad
The U.S. Postal Service issued the 20 cent "Nation of Readers" stamp on October 16, 1984. It is modeled on the famous father-son photo taken by Matthew Brady in February 1864.Lincoln is seated and Tad is standing at his side. They are both reviewing a photo album that belonged to Brady, which he had in his studio for his patrons to review while they waited for their appointments. Brady saw Lincoln showing the book to Tad and was so taken by the pose that he asked them to hold it while he shot their photo.
One little note of trivia--this picture is the only portrait of Lincoln which portrays him wearing glasses.
