My Least Popular Lenses - and Lessons I've Learned From Making Them
Ranked #676 in Squidoo Tips, #121,428 overall
Lenses In Need of TLC
At the very least, this lens will serve to keep me aware of the lenses that need to be worked on. I'm putting together a plan to turn faltering lenses into worthwhile ones. When my plan turns out to be a success, I'll have to make a lens about that too.
In the meantime, maybe my experience with lenses that don't work well will serve as a warning and sign of caution for other lensmasters. Yes, these are the types of lenses that will fail to bring in those much-needed search engine visitors. There's a lesson to be learned here! There are ways to make popular lenses, and I'm developing the skills. If I knew then what I know now, these lenses would be much different.

Note: This updates you on ALL my lenses, not just this one!
All lenses listed on this lens have had five visitors or fewer during the last week. I'll start with the least popular ones.
This lens was most recently updated on January 26, 2009; I had 25 unpopular lenses and 11 lenses that graduated from the unpopular lens list... a few with amazing results! My Predictions lens went from this list way up to 500 visits weekly!
This lens was created on November 20, 2008, at which time I had 23 unpopular lenses.
On an upbeat note I'll say that I've also got this many lenses bringing in two and three-digit traffic, so all is not lost.

Lessons Learned From Making These Lenses
Never make a lens using text found elsewhere on the web. I did that with my Secret of the Andes lens. Technically it was okay since I wrote that text on one of my blogs - the copyright belonged to me. But Google views it as duplicate content and ignores it. My blog post is still doing great but the lens never did. Therefore I'm rewriting the whole thing now, and when done I'll ping it again to see if I can get a better search engine ranking.
Religion isn't a popular topic; politics is. I think this is a statement on the mindset of our civilization as a whole. I recently analyzed the entire Top 100 list and there were four political lenses there, but no religious lenses. Therefore it is likely a lens like LaoTse will never make it to the top.
Another thing about the LaoTse lens - I looked up other LaoTse lenses when I got done making it, and saw there are a lot of other lenses on Taoism. It was a labor of love, but isn't something unique. I learned a bit from making it, but won't repeat my mistake.
I've made several lenses on individual books both with SquidLit and without. Only one of my book lenses is doing well - the one about To Kill A Mockingbird. Every other individual book lens is a dud. That one book that is getting a lot of search engine traffic is a classic. I will definitely consider that next time I think about making a book lens! And by the way, there are NO book lenses in the Top 100. Too bad, because that's my specialty. Maybe I need a new specialty here!
Dowsing? Predictions? I get the impression that anything that is too heebie-geebie is going to have a hard time in the lensrankings because these are topics most people aren't interested in... just like my Benjamin Frankin as a vegetarian lens. I'm just getting too far away from the mainstream by expressing my interest in these topics. The only reason my Bigfoot lenses do well is that I own one of the most commonly visited Bigfoot sites on the internet. It does well in search engine results and sends a lot of traffic to my Bigfoot lenses. If I owned a huge dowsing site, I could probably get traffic to that lens too - but I don't, and the lens is floundering.
Any lens, to be successful, needs to be planned from the beginning. I'm learning this as I go along, and have come closer to the solution by focusing on content writing recently. I'm coming up with a solution for planning successful lenses. One of these days I'll make a lens to reveal my secrets.
My Intentions For These Lenses
I'm giving each of these lenses an evening's worth of rebuilding, revamping, revision.
I'll put each of these lenses on my promotional calendar, which means that when I get to them I'll do dozens of helpful promotional activities to make them available to the public.
Because some of these lenses aren't performing well because they aren't listed in Google search result pages, I'll research ways to get lenses listed, and report any success I have on that issue.
When I re-create each of these lenses I will set them to be charity lenses. I'm not making any money on them anyway, so why not? So far I'm supporting the Juvenile Diabetes Research Fund, The Polly Klaas Foundation, and Action Against Hunger. I feel good about fixing these lenses up and setting them free. I've noticed that after doing that I've had a couple lenses increase in lensranking.

- I have been learning some of the same lessons. I have been learning what works almost by accident. I started with local lenses, one of which still does fairly well, and one of which is at the bottom. Maybe that's because it's about spring and it's now fall. My one religious lens is also having a tough time -- I've had to promote it on denominational sites and on Facebook groups to give it any life at all. The closer we get to topics that meet people's real needs, the better off we will be. I guess that's why the "death by suicide" lenses have done so well. I discovered that by accident when my Sarah lens went to the top of my list. I thought it was just because I was promoting it to people who knew her, but two months later it's still doing well. I played with the tags a bit yesterday and I still don't see it on Google, so I don't know how people are finding it.
