Lenses In Need of TLC

These are my least popular Squidoo lenses. Either they are terrible topics, or I haven't given them enough loving attention. Either way, I haven't given up on them.

At the very least, this lens will serve to keep me aware of the lenses that need to be worked on. I'm putting together a plan to turn faltering lenses into worthwhile ones. When my plan turns out to be a success, I'll have to make a lens about that too.

In the meantime, maybe my experience with lenses that don't work well will serve as a warning and sign of caution for other lensmasters. Yes, these are the types of lenses that will fail to bring in those much-needed search engine visitors. There's a lesson to be learned here! There are ways to make popular lenses, and I'm developing the skills. If I knew then what I know now, these lenses would be much different.

This lens is dedicated to lensmaster Katinka Hesselink, Spirituality, who inspired me to make it by her blog post: Unpopular lenses unite - Meet my Hidden Spiritual Secret Lenses. Her most unpopular lenses lens is here: Spirituality's Least Popular Lenses.

All lenses listed on this lens have had five visitors or fewer during the last week. I'll start with the least popular ones.

This lens was most recently updated on January 26, 2009; I had 25 unpopular lenses and 11 lenses that graduated from the unpopular lens list... a few with amazing results! My Predictions lens went from this list way up to 500 visits weekly!

This lens was created on November 20, 2008, at which time I had 23 unpopular lenses.

On an upbeat note I'll say that I've also got this many lenses bringing in two and three-digit traffic, so all is not lost.

Zero Visits

Video Blogging for Beginners

0 visits in the last week -- rank: 182,170

I made this one a few months ago, but almost nobody has noticed it and Google isn't listing it.

Ten Ways To Use A Tent

0 visits in the last week -- rank: 95,751

I wanted to make this to try selling something on a lens. I decided to sell tents. When I started putting the lens together, I thought of all the cool things people could do with tents, and made a list of my ideas.

The Muse Online Writers Conference

0 visits in the last week -- rank: 44,291

Okay, I know the conference was in October and it has been over for about a month now - but it is happening again next October. Even during Sept/Oct this lens was a failure so I'm going to need a new approach.

1 visit in the last week - rank: 100,542

This lens was created in response to a question found on SquidU. Not many people are interested in broadcasting their SquidCasts via email... but if you're one of them, here's the instructions on how to make that work.

In Praise of the Squidoo Guestbook

1 visit in the last week - rank: 97,461

I made this lens because of my frustration over not being able to find guestbooks on lenses I wanted to make comments about. I hasn't received much attention lately though at one time dipped into the top 2000 for a few days.

Save Gas - Ride a Bicycle

1 visit in the last week -- rank: 80,204

I get the impression not very many people share my concern with saving money. We are SO addicted to our cars!

Emergency Survival

1 visits in the last week -- rank: 80,061

Few people seem to care about planning for evacuations before they happen.

UPDATE - 11/27/08 - I totally revamped this lens and am doing a promotion project on it. Let's see if this helps! It still has had zero visits in the last week.

Festival of the Inner Light

A wonderful new winter holiday for lightworkers.

Literary Arts Lenses by LindaJM

1 visit in the last week - rank: 56,467

I never expected this lens to be a big performer, but it rarely gets viewed at all. At least it gives my other lenses more links.

Linda Jo Martin

1 visit this week - rank: 54,424

This was at one time my lowest-ranked lens... about myself. LOL I thought it was going to be a squid-who lens, but it didn't turn out that way. I might have to try again.

Two Visits

2 visits in the last week - rank: 115,896

I just started this lens because the first part of the journal was getting too long.

Not a lot of visits, but I still like having this lens to keep track of my progress.

2 visits in the last week - rank: 58,839

I got a little carried away with this book. The lens doesn't attract many visitors...

3 visits in the last week - rank: 41,023

This one started off as a rant, but I soon learned others agreed with me. It is my response to people who visit lenses without leaving feedback of any sort.

Websites For Writers

3 visits this week - rank: 26,964

I made this lens for a writer's conference presentation I was making in October 2008. It is a collection of writing sites classified according to site elements. Not expected to be a big hit, but useful anyway.

Four Visits

4 visits this week - rank: 38,224

I recently won this lens from the owner of the Tags-I-Like networking forum!

Coping With Empty Nest Syndrome

4 visits this week - rank: 21,914

My youngest child recently moved out and this lens contains my research about empty nest syndrome.

Five Visits

[Right now, I have no lenses getting five hits weekly. I have several getting six hits weekly and I've moved them to the "Graduated Lenses" section below. Graduated Lenses are those that used to be featured on this page with only 0 to 5 hits weekly.]

Lessons Learned From Making These Lenses

For every mistake we've made, there are lessons to be learned.
  1. Never make a lens using text found elsewhere on the web. I did that with my Secret of the Andes lens. Technically it was okay since I wrote that text on one of my blogs - the copyright belonged to me. But Google views it as duplicate content and ignores it. My blog post is still doing great but the lens never did. Therefore I'm rewriting the whole thing now, and when done I'll ping it again to see if I can get a better search engine ranking.

  2. Religion isn't a popular topic; politics is. I think this is a statement on the mindset of our civilization as a whole. I recently analyzed the entire Top 100 list and there were four political lenses there, but no religious lenses. Therefore it is likely a lens like LaoTse will never make it to the top.

  3. Another thing about the LaoTse lens - I looked up other LaoTse lenses when I got done making it, and saw there are a lot of other lenses on Taoism. It was a labor of love, but isn't something unique. I learned a bit from making it, but won't repeat my mistake.

  4. I've made several lenses on individual books both with SquidLit and without. Only one of my book lenses is doing well - the one about To Kill A Mockingbird. Every other individual book lens is a dud. That one book that is getting a lot of search engine traffic is a classic. I will definitely consider that next time I think about making a book lens! And by the way, there are NO book lenses in the Top 100. Too bad, because that's my specialty. Maybe I need a new specialty here!

  5. Dowsing? Predictions? I get the impression that anything that is too heebie-geebie is going to have a hard time in the lensrankings because these are topics most people aren't interested in... just like my Benjamin Frankin as a vegetarian lens. I'm just getting too far away from the mainstream by expressing my interest in these topics. The only reason my Bigfoot lenses do well is that I own one of the most commonly visited Bigfoot sites on the internet. It does well in search engine results and sends a lot of traffic to my Bigfoot lenses. If I owned a huge dowsing site, I could probably get traffic to that lens too - but I don't, and the lens is floundering.

  6. Any lens, to be successful, needs to be planned from the beginning. I'm learning this as I go along, and have come closer to the solution by focusing on content writing recently. I'm coming up with a solution for planning successful lenses. One of these days I'll make a lens to reveal my secrets.

My Intentions For These Lenses

I'm not giving up on these lenses. I've got a plan to make them perform better.
  1. I'm giving each of these lenses an evening's worth of rebuilding, revamping, revision.

  2. I'll put each of these lenses on my promotional calendar, which means that when I get to them I'll do dozens of helpful promotional activities to make them available to the public.

  3. Because some of these lenses aren't performing well because they aren't listed in Google search result pages, I'll research ways to get lenses listed, and report any success I have on that issue.

  4. When I re-create each of these lenses I will set them to be charity lenses. I'm not making any money on them anyway, so why not? So far I'm supporting the Juvenile Diabetes Research Fund, The Polly Klaas Foundation, and Action Against Hunger. I feel good about fixing these lenses up and setting them free. I've noticed that after doing that I've had a couple lenses increase in lensranking.

Do you actually update this page with your most recent least-favorites? That would be a lot of work! I'm featuring this lens on my new thanks-to-fans lens. And, thanks.

This is fun and amusing and insightful. I am resigned to having most of my lenses be unpopular, it is the story of my life, so it doesn't bother me. keep on keeping on!

Great topic for a lens: it basically encapsulates all of my lenses. Ha!

I have been learning some of the same lessons. I have been learning what works almost by accident. I started with local lenses, one of which still does fairly well, and one of which is at the bottom. Maybe that's because it's about spring and it's now fall. My one religious lens is also having a tough time -- I've had to promote it on denominational sites and on Facebook groups to give it any life at all. The closer we get to topics that meet people's real needs, the better off we will be. I guess that's why the "death by suicide" lenses have done so well. I discovered that by accident when my Sarah lens went to the top of my list. I thought it was just because I was promoting it to people who knew her, but two months later it's still doing well. I played with the tags a bit yesterday and I still don't see it on Google, so I don't know how people are finding it.

Gosh, if I did a lensography of my least popular lenses -- it might be a biggie! It's a challenge to keep traffic up to over 465 lenses. I like how Carrie has her lowest ranking lens to encourage lensmasters to tweet their lenses.

Five Things I've Learned About Successful Squidoo Lensmasters
Here are five things I've learned about successful Squidoo lensmasters.

Graduated Lenses!

Predictions

Graduated!... 466 visits in the last week - rank: 136

I made this lens just for fun, to experiment publicly with predictions. Then around the new year it started picking up in traffic, and so I improved it by importing lots of predictions from other people.

Vintage Beatles Albums - What Are They Worth?

Graduated! 28 visits this week - rank: 6,325

I made this one during the summer of '08 for the 'eBay Challenge' ... thought for a long time it would never get traffic but look! It suddenly is getting visits!

Dowsing

Graduated!... 16 visits in the last week -- rank: 7,795

I am so into dowsing, I had to make a lens about it. I realize not everyone shares this passion, but this lens gets almost no action. I think the few visits it now has are from people visiting the Predictions lens.

Lao Tse

Graduated!... 27 visits this week - rank: 14,617

Wow... finally some two-digit traffic for my Lao Tse lens!? I'm surprised!

August Rush

Graduated! 22 visits in the last week - rank: 14,541

I thought August Rush was an outstanding movie, so I'm glad this lens is starting to see some two-digit traffic.

Secret of the Andes

Graduated!... 24 visits this week - rank: 17,120

I recently changed most of the text on this page. Now it is getting traffic. Yay!

Mary Summer Rain

Graduated! 27 visits this week - rank: 18,344

Here's another one that's surprising me after months of doing nothing!

Raymon Grace: The Future Is Yours

Graduated! 6 visits in the last week - rank: 27,997

I'm a fan of Raymon Grace, and couldn't help wanting to make a lens to tell people about him. Unfortunately hardly anyone has heard of him outside of dowsers, and dowsing is a fringe topic, to be sure.

Benjamin Franklin Was A Vegetarian

Graduated!... 6 visits in the last week - rank: 48,164

Seems like nobody cares much about Benjamin Franklin anymore. He's definitely yesterday's news. And probably even fewer people care about vegetarianism. Maybe I just haven't promoted this in the right place yet.

Books For Writers

Graduated! ... 6 visits in the last week - rank: 46,760

This has never worked. It probably needs a new title, new format... new everything. Few people look at it.

The Tao of Keywords

Graduated! ... 6 visits in the last week - rank: 54,263

I really like this lens, and got a few nice comments on it when I first made it. But then someone rated it low and now it rarely gets any visits. I'm not sure what to do about it.
