AVG Anti-Virus: AVG Anti-Virus protects your computer from all those infectious bugs (viruses) that inhabit cyber space trying to multiply themselves through unprotected computers. AVG Free is their basic anti-virus and is very easy to install and operate. Once installed you can run an initial system scan and then set up a schedule for automatic scans. The program updates itself automatically on a daily basis ensuring that you have the lastest protection updates. This program will run in the background and provide realtime protection. I switched from Norton to AVG a few years back and recommend it to everyone I can. Not only is the price right, but it caught viruses that my Norton didn't!!!

AVG also has free Anti-Spyware and Anti-Rootkit programs along with paid versions of all their internet security programs. Personally, I have never found the need for the paid versions, the free ones do the job for me!

ZoneAlarm: ZoneAlarm is designed to protect your internet connection from hackers, spyware, and adware programs on your computer that try to connect to their servers. It basically contains a firewall, an application control, an internet lock, and different zones of security.

The firewall controls the door to your computer and allows only traffic that you understand and initiate. It gives you a whole documentation about all the access attempts and watches all the ports of your computer. When a connection is set, first it gives you a warning and also it gives the IP address of the connection. Therefore, it is a great tool to keep your ports under control and see the attempts of other users to hack into your computer.

The application control allows you to decide which applications can and cannot use the internet. When a program attempts to use your internet connection ZoneAlarm asks you what you want to do about this connection; allow or deny. By this way, you can eliminate the adware programs like gator (the most common one which gives pop-ups every five minutes) or bargains... etc.

The internet lock blocks Internet traffic while your computer is unattended or while you're not using the Internet. It can be activated automatically with your computer's screensaver or after a set period of inactivity.

Overall, this program protects your computer in a very concrete way. ZoneAlarm makes configuring a firewall, which sounds like a troubling task to the majority of computer users, incredibly easy with a wizard. Maintaining and updating settings also is a snap when you're using the stylish interface and its simple slider controls. It is an excellent firewall solution for about most average user. Most of you will feel more secure with this program; especially when you see the Internet logs of the software and zonal solutions that it offers.

Like AVG Anti-Virus, ZoneAlarm has paid versions of their internet security software. Whether or not you upgrade to a paid version is up to you, but I find that the free version fulfills all my security needs and this is another program I can't do without.

OpenOffice (OpenOffice.org) is an Open Source multiplatform, multilingual office suite that is compatible with all other major office suites (ie. Microsoft Office). If you are familiar with Microsoft Office or similar products, you will feel quite at home with this open source software. It is packed with features and will perform most business tasks. And for the price, you can't go wrong!

OpenOffice features the following components:

FileZilla: If you're looking to upload and/or download files to your web server or an FTP site, FileZilla is a great, free, software program to use. It is fast, stable and easy to use.

FileZilla is an Open Source FTP program for file uploading and downloading to and from your FTP site, server or host. The program lets you transfer files and navigate among folders, websites, and your computer. This software enables you to perform multiple file transfers simultaneously.

Filezilla comes in two versions, FileZilla Client and FileZilla Server. The client version is what I use to upload and download files to my website server. The client version comes in different versions for Windows, Mac, Linux and more. The FileZilla Server only comes in the Windows version at this time.

If you're looking for a good FTP tool this one will do the job and won't cost you a dime.

GIMP is an acronym for GNU Image Manipulation Program. First released by two Berkeley students in 1996, GIMP is a freely distributed Open-Source program for such tasks as photo retouching, image composition and image authoring. Since its initial release it has developed a large user/developer base and although best known to Linux and Unix users, it has been ported to work with most Operating Systems, including Windows.

GIMP has many capabilities and can be used as a simple paint program, an advanced photo retouching program, an online batch processor, or as an image format converter and more. It is expandable and extensible, designed to be enhanced with plug-ins and extensions to do just about anything. The advanced scripting interface allows everything from the simplest task to the most complex image manipulation procedures to be easily scripted.
