Line Dancing - My Fun Exercise

Line dancing is a choreographed dance performed by a group of people in lines and all facing the same direction. Everyone does the same sequence of steps set to particular piece of music.

Line dance is characterized by
1. Count is the number of beats for each dance sequence. The count is usually a multiple of 8 or 16. The higher the count the more difficult is the dance.

2. Level of difficulty is divided into beginner (easy and simple to learn), intermediate (harder but without too many tricky steps) and advanced (tricky steps and/or fast music).

3. Walls can be one, two or four. A wall is the direction in which the dancers are facing at any time during the dance. In a dance sequence, the dancers may change direction many times.

No one is really sure how it all began. Although line dancing is often associated with country and western music, it has similarities with folk dancing. Line dancing started in the USA sometime in the late 1970s to early 1980s. It really became a big dance craze with Billy Ray Cyrus' hit, 'Achy Breaky Heart'. The dance to this song was written as a marketing ploy to sell the song but it soon helped to spread the popularity of line dancing. Today line dancing is not confined to country and western music. New dance steps are choreographed every week to different music from country and western, jazz, and even the latest chart sounds.
