Linear Laminate Woodturning

First generation linear laminate
These woodturnings are done a bit different. The feature bands are all done using linear laminates. A linear laminate is a board with one or more stripes of a contrasting wood. The linear laminate is cut into segments and glued back together. In woodturning they would be glued into a circle but they can also be used in flat woodworking.
The centerband in this turning is the easiest pattern to create using this process. Its called a first generation linear laminate because it was cut apart and glued back together just one time.

- Here is an article on my website explaining in detail how to do a first generation linear laminate pattern.
Second generation linear laminate
Peruvian walnut and American holly
As you can see the pattern in this vase looks a bit more complicated. This is a second generation linear laminate pattern. The reason it is called second generation is it has been cut and glued back together to form a first generation linear laminate similar to the turning above. But it was cut apart and glued back together a second time to achieve this pattern. Thats why it is called second generation.
The linear laminate this started from was merely a Peruvian walnut board with two white (American holly) lines through it.
Third generation linear laminate
Bloodwood, oak, maple and mahogany
Now were getting much more complicated. At least it looks that way but in reality it really looks much harder than it actually is. This was made just like the turning at the top, Then it looked similar to the second generation laminate. The difference is this one was cut apart a third time and glued back together to achieve this third generation pattern. The pattern at the bottom of this turning is a first generation pattern similar to the turning at the top of the page.

- Your woodturning lenses are nothing short of amazing! Big Thumbs up and Like from me. I bought my husband a wood lathe that he had many years of fun with, so even the most basic amateur can make great things on a lathe!
