Journeyman Lineman maintain power lines and high voltage.
A lineman constructs and maintains electric power transmission and distribution facilities. Work includes energized and dead power lines. Working on voltages higher than those which can be worked using gloves are worked with special sticks known as hot-line tools or hot stick, with which power lines can be safely handled from a distance.
Rubber gloves are an important safety tool for a lineman. They should be tested at least every 90 days. They must be visually checked and given an air test before using them. There should also be leather protectors worn over the rubber gloves at all times. This is very important to wear all the time especially when near over 750 volts or more. When low voltage is being worked with they wear low voltage rubber gloves. Such as secondary meter bases or meter cabinets and when removing animals, weeds or objects.
Check your equipment, gloves, belt, gaffs on your hooks every time you climb... THEY ARE ALL THAT IS BETWEEN YOU AND THE DIRT.
Below are Journeyman Lineman requirements for that next evaluation or promotion.
(Also see t-shirts, long-sleeve shirts, stickers, tile coaster gifts and much more at the bottom. We're selling a variety of colors and sizes. Gift ideas for that special person.)
Required steps to being promoted to Journeyman Lineman
Levels of a Lineman

To become a "Journeyman Lineman" requires working hard, training, courses, and most work their way up from Groundman. There are usually several required steps before being promoted to a Journeyman Lineman.
Working your way up could go in this order: Groundman, Operator, Apprentice Lineman which has it's own levels, and finally to Journeyman Lineman.
1. A Groundman duties are stocking and loading the truck and watching and learning linemen from the ground. Preparing for the pole worker his materials on the ground. You should strive to know what things to have ready before they ask. Once a certain level is obtained you will be required to take a course in climbing utility poles that are not energized.
2. Apprentice lineman will begin running electrical services to houses, or any wire that is not energized. You may be required to hang security lights in various places too. At this level you will be climbing low voltage, but not handling it.
3. Another level of apprentice lineman would be working on secondary voltage from poles. You'll learn about power transformers and importance of rubber gloves, this is still low voltage.
4. The next level of apprentice lineman you'll reduce climbing and work more from a bucket truck with lots more responsibility and knowledge. There is greater risk and still the all most importance of rubber gloves.
5. The Journeyman Lineman level performs all types of complicated construction and maintenance of de-energized and energized distribution and transmission systems. Patrols lines, follows safety rules and regulations, reports accidents to Supervisor, assists in training and operates large automotive equipment. There should be a demonstrated ability to communicate well with the public and co-workers. Will be called out during non work hours. And let me say this is demanding on the family. Being called out at 2am is not great, but could pay well.
This career is not for everyone, but for a selected few. You must love the outdoors, all kinds of weather. The one situation that stands out is icy weather. Stormy weather can be scary, but ice is a different story. Many letters were sent from government politicians thanking all the overtime workers during the big ice storms. It was non-stop work with few rests.
Arkansas Ground-Zero for 2000 Ice Storm

HOT SPRINGS, Ark.(AP) - The thermal springs that give this city its name had become the only source of water. Hundreds of mangled trees littered roadways. Tens of thousands of homes remained in the dark.
Hot Springs and other southwestern Arkansas cities were ground-zero for the recent nasty weather, bearing the brunt of an ice storm that has left about 550,000 customers without power, caused 14 deaths and made travel virtually impossible.
''On a scale from one to 10, this is a 12,'' Gov. Mike Huckabee said Wednesday, assessing the damage. ''This storm has not been kind to us.''
Hot Springs was among many towns that lost their water treatment plants when the lights went out. About 40,000 homes and businesses were without power early Thursday in the Hot Springs area. Hot Spring's population is about 33,000.
A falling tree knocked down a 2-inch power cable Wednesday morning, leaving the city's springs as the only running water in town. After water service was restored to about half the city late Wednesday, residents were warned to boil their water before drinking or cooking.
Public spring-water taps downtown attracted bottle- and jug-carrying residents.
Kevin Byrd said he used a chain saw to cut his way to the taps because so many trees were scattered on the road. ''It looked like a tornado had been through,'' he said.
Around 275,000 Arkansas power customers were without service because of the storm, which wound to full strength Christmas Day and Tuesday. Also affected were 120,000 homes and businesses in Oklahoma, 106,000 in Texas and 50,000 in northern Louisiana.
Police attributed 14 deaths to the storm - nine in Texas, four in New Mexico and one in Missouri.
The ice storm was Arkansas' second of the month. A storm Dec. 12-13 knocked out power to nearly 250,000 customers, some of whom went without electricity for 10 days or more.

- Lineman are some very brave, very tough individuals. I could not do their job, but I really appreciate what they do. With a job like that though it is really important to keep your family protected if the unthinkable happens. I recommend getting life insurance if you haven't already, it really does make the difference. The next time i see one of these guys out in the snow I'm making them hot chocolate. : ) Great Lens
