THICK & THIN LINES IN PHOTOSHOP
Do you ever wonder how thick and thin lines are created at all those clip art pieces and designs you see around?
Here is a method you can follow that requires no extra drwing from your side. Make sure you have Photoshop 5 and above installed at your computer and a scanner to scann your drawings.
INTRODUCTION
There is an easy way to create thick and thin lines in photoshop. This method will show you step by step how to turn every line drawings to a thick and thin line drawings automatically without having to implement any additional drawing. To demonstrate this I will use the following simple drawing of a dog. This drawing is done on a piece of paper and scanned at a simple scanner at 300 dpi. As you can see the line is pretty much broken and generally of bad quality. This is not a concern at this point.
This design of the SCOTTY dog is available at my Teeteaser store at the animals section in a variaty of products.
PREPARATION
Make sure the size of your image is at least 1000 by 1000 pixels. If not you must set your dimensions around that.
Go to Filter>Other>Minimum
This will give you the option of strengthening your line. Generally a setting of 2 will work fine.
Select black as your foreground and white as you background colors.
Go to Filter>Sketch>Stamp
This will give you the option to further strengthen the line and also smoothing it a bit.
A good setting for this is dark/light balance at 15 and smoothing between 6 and 10 but you can experiment with other values that produce better results for your image.
THICK & THIN TREATMENT
Go to Window>Paths>Make work path. Make work path is hiding inside the little arrow pointing right from the Path tab. It is a Path setting tool and you have an option to set the tolerance between 0.5 and 10 pixels. The higher the tolerance value the more abstract the look of your lines will be.
This might take a while based on the complexity of your drawing. What will appear is a new path under the path tab and a path line at your canvas.
Your next step is to fill the path with a color. This can be black if you want a black line.
Before you do that you want to fill the path in a new layer and not on top of the existing layer so create a new layer and then press again the arrow next to the path tab and select fill. If your foreground color is still black select foreground color. At this menu you have several other option of you want a pattern for example or a feathered border. Make sure you select anti-alias so you boarders are antialised.
After your thick and thin lines are created you can get rid of the path by dragging it to the trash can of the path window or by selecting again the arrow next to the path tab and then delete path.
