Building A Liner Pond

Using A Pond Liner For Your Backyard Pond

Liner ponds are a popular option for backyard ponds, because of the flexibility. With a preformed pond, you're limited to the shapes that are available. When you build a pond with a flexible liner, you can buld your pond of any size or shape that you'd like. Because of this, however, you do need to do some extra planning when you install a liner pond. The first thing you'll want to do, is to decide the size and shape of your pond. You'll need to know the length of the pond, the width, and the depth. If your pond is irregularly shaped, then use the measurements from the widest points. Once you know the dimensions, you can calculate what size liner you'll need to get. Add 2x the depth of the pond, plus 2 feet overlap to both the length and the width, this will give you the liner size. For example, for a pond that will be 6 feet wide, 8 feet long, and 2 feet deep, you'll want a liner of 12x14 feet. (6 feet, 4 feet (twice the depth) 2 feet overlap) x (8 feet, 4 feet (twice the depth) 2 feet overlap). If this seems confusing, you can find pond liner calculators online.

Digging The Pond

When you purchase your pond liner, you should purchase 45 mil EDPM liners. EDPM is stable, and remains flexible in a wide range of temperature conditions. EDPM is also resistant to UV radiation, so will last longer than other pond liners. If you plan to have plants or fish in your pond, you should make sure that the liner is safe for fish and plants.

After you've designed the pond, and purchased all of your materials, then go out, and mark the outline of the pond with a rope or hose. Dig a coping shelf about 2 inches deep, and about 16 inches wide around the perimeter of the pond, to hold the liner overlay, and the rockwork that will surround the pond. Use a square shovel to dig this shelf. Make sure that the shelf is level. Once you're done with this shelf, then dig a bog shelf for plants, just inside your outline. This shelf should be about 9-12 inches deep. After this, dig out the center of the pond to the desired depth. While you're digging, make sure that the edges of the pond are level.

Preparing And Finishing The Pond

Now, prepare the hole for the liner. Remove any sharp rocks or roots from the hole, that could puncture the liner, causing a leak. At this point, you can line the hole with underlayment, which will help to protect the pond liner. You can use smaller pieces for the underlayment, just overlap them, and tape them together to keep the pieces from shifting later. Now, carefully lay the liner out, smoothing it to the contours of the pond. Minimize any folding or pleating as much as possible, since folds will trap dirt and debris.

Once you've gotten the liner laid out into the hole, start filling the pond with water. Periodically stop filling to smooth out any wrinkles in the pond liner. Once the pond is filled, you can trim off any excess liner, but be sure that there is plenty of overhang to extend over the coping shelf. Place any edging, boulders or rockwork around the edge of the liner to hold it down. Now, you can finish off the pond with the pump and filter, and place any plants and fish into the pond.
