General Audience/Personal Contact Management
MySpace: You surely have heard of it, as it is considered as the largest social networking site with approximately 200 million users.
Facebook: Ranks second to MySpace, it has over 70 million users. Anyone over 13 years old can be a member of its community.
Bebo: It is reported as the third most widely-used in the United States, and is potentially to strongly compete against MySpace. It is the most widely used in the United Kingdom, Ireland, and New Zealand, though.
Friendster: Before MySpace, it was considered as the top social networking service. It is more popular in Southeast Asia.
Business
LinkedIn: With over 23 million professionals in its community, it is one of the largest business social networking services. It helps its users find more professional and business opportunities.
Xing: It also helps people build connections with other professionals and business people. Basic membership is free. However, it requires a monthly paid membership for additional features, which include sending messages to people who do not have direct connection with you.
There are also sites which target a more specific group of users:
Flickr: people who are into photography or simply love taking and uploading pictures, and then share
them with others
Flixster: movie fans
GuildCafe: online gamers
Shelfari: book lovers
Sportsvite: people who are into sports
Taltopia: artists (musicians, actors, dancers, visual artists, etc.)
WAYN: people who are into travel and lifestyle
