A word about internet scams
Social networking is a great way to build your business, but because you're dealing with humans, you have to deal with the bad guys and girls as well as the good ones. If I can give you ONE piece of advice about social networking, it would be to keep your eyes and ears open to scams. Be on the look-out, constantly, and do the research on what ever your being approached with before getting scammed.
People can often be pretty ruthless. There are MANY people out there that will try to take you for every penny you have. For more information on some of the current scams out there, please check out my Spams & Scams page. It's better to be safe, than sorry!

Like any of the other social networks, FaceBook does have it's pros and cons. You're only allowed 5,000 people ("friends") on your profile. This may sound like a bad thing, but really, how often are you going to have regular conversations with 5,000 people? It IS a great way to get the word out quickly and easily about whatever you're promoting, though. They also have live chat boxes, you can create specific "groups" (to target a very specific product or idea), and they are very good about taking care of 'unsavory characters' - those people that are lude, crude, and obnoxious!

It's FREE! How TWEET it is!
Although it doesn't have the 'personal touch' offered by some of the other social networking sites, it DOES have it's place. You do get to meet other people, and you ARE able to get the word out about your interests. But, again, maybe I'm just greedy. I want to be able to see pictures, videos, and have chat capabilities. If you want to just be able to say "here is what I'm selling, go check it out," then Twitter is great for that.
Squidoo
Article Marketing at it's finest!
So, how does it fit into social networks then? Because there's a whole community of Squidoo lens (their word for article) writers that, not only can you share your articles with, but can leave comments and get to know other writers as well.
Squidoo is also a free site, but you're welcome to add any affiliate links that you have. They also have arrangements through Amazon, Ebay, CafePress, and Zazzle so that you can create links from those companies and earn commissions as well. VERY cool!!

Social network for business professionals
LinkedIn is another wonderful, free resource for social networks. It's geared more toward hooking employees of companies together, though. I've been able to touch base with several people I've worked with in the past, and that's been fun. I'm also able to find people who share some of my current interests, so that's nice, too. But, it's DEFINITELY geared more toward business, and not socializing.It does have link sharing capabilities, and you can cross-post with a Twitter account, but again, most of the people there are business professionals. They're not interested in hearing about your kid's first steps or your dog's favorite chew toy. If you've got a hot, new approach to underwater basket-weaving, though, and you work for a company that sells underwater basket-weaving supplies, LinkedIn is the perfect place to get the word out on it!
