What Are Listening Devices?

A listening device is really just an amplified microphone that will greatly enhance all sounds around you. Depending on your needs, there are a number of good quality listening devices on the market.

Nature & Wildlife:
If you like to watch birds or wildlife, a simple intermediate level shotgun microphone mounted on your binoculars will greatly enhance your experience. They come with headphones so you can hear and see up close animals that you could not normally get close to.

School, Lectures, Movies, Television, and Conversations:
An introductory level or consumer grade listening device will help you hear your teacher or a lecture if you are in the back row, or are hard of hearing.

Surveillance & Counter-Surveillance:
Professional grade surveillance microphones are much more sensitive to lower sounds, and come with a higher price tag and sometimes have some type of dish to enhance the sounds. Perfect for hearing distant conversations and used by law enforcement, private investigators, and anyone who needs to hear distant conversations.

Any listening device has a headphone jack that you can use to also record the sounds to something like a digital voice recorder. This will give you a record of what you listen to. If you intend to record conversations, make sure you are not breaking any federal or state laws, as it's usually illegal to record a conversation without a persons permission.
