As a musician, recording artist, producer and composer, you might think I was opposed to letting people listen to music for free. After all, I've got kids to feed and put through college just like anyone else.

No, I'm aware that people getting to know an artist may need a lot of help in deciding exactly what to purchase, and may need reassurance that they do indeed like your music!

So I encourage people to listen to online music for pleasure, relaxation, meditation, wellness and healing. After all, it is my greatest pleasure and honor to be able to help create joy, peace, relief from stress, and overall wellbeing.

So here you'll find tips for getting the most out of your musical experience, with links to free online music as well as some of the most inspiring recorded music online today.

Listening to Online Holiday Music can Hurt 

Are you one of those who think holiday music is for elevators?

NPR music critic Christian Bordal had something to say about this subject.

While his own personal tastes run along the same vein as the music I included in my recent holiday music contest (church music and peaceful instrumentals such as The Gift of Love and Going Home Again), he called most holiday music "music purgatory".

"Going Home Again" is the name of the album I'm giving away in my free holiday music contest. Going home, coming home, can have so many different meanings.

I cannot believe the beauty of this message I received in an email. The author graciously agreed to allow me to share it, and added an additional note which I've included as the P.S.

Dear Daniel,

Last Christmas I was wrapping presents in the living room. It was cold and wet outside. The wood stove was burning, the tree was lit with ribbons of gold and burgundy streaming down, bread was baking in the oven, lights were low and candles were lit. The whole house had a dreamy effect.

My 18 year old daughter (who has had very "interesting" teen years) came down the stairs in her nightgown and asked me, "What is that music you are playing? I feel like I'm in a Disney movie. . . in the forest, with all of the animals that talk."

Free online music can help listeners become familiar with independent artists

As an independent artist with my own record label, I offer a music player with samples of my music on my website. Visitors can listen to my music for free. The player starts with a click on any track and plays continuously.

Visitors who bookmark my music sample page can listen to music while they browse the net, or while they browse my website. I've purposely created samples that are at least a minute long, twice as long as most online samples, and one is even 7 minutes long.

Why headphones aren't the best way to listen to music

For us musicians and other artists, the senses bleed into and enhance one another quite naturally; we speak of the thickness of the air in a concert hall, the sound colors of a particular piece of music, and the spatial qualities of music.

Deaf people can teach us how to "listen" to music like they do, through their feet if they are barefoot, or by placing their hands on an instrument being played, or even by laying down on a piano or on a stage.

Listening to music happens with the entire body. Music has layers and textures of sounds, overtones and undertones, a complexity, depth and life as if it is a living, breathing, three-dimensional entity. Smell the music, taste the music, feel it in your heart, muscles, skin, and in the hollows of your bones.

I was pleased to find this musician community website today. The site is professional, clean, modern and easy to navigate. Artists, whether independent or signed, can have a personal page, blog, video page, and even sell their music in the site store.

Visitors can listen to clips or full tracks, see album art, contact the musician, and embed music player widgets on any website such as myspace, etc.

I've included links to a few artists' pages that I visited on SoundClick. These particular artists were, for me, a joy to discover. There are so many more waiting to be found, so please visit this website for the opportunity to listen to music online.

Listening to and playing Irish or Celtic music has always been deeply moving to me, handed down as it has been from generation to generation in simple ceremonies and family occasions.

Whether they are lilting dance music, soothing lullabies or familiar folk ballads, Irish music is steeped in the spirit of relationship and family tradition.

Celtic music is often used by meditation leaders searching for ways to enable their students to relive their childhoods, perhaps finding comfort or release in fond memories.

Alzheimer patients sometimes are able to recover lost memories by listening to familiar folk music.

Country, folk and ethnic music unites us 

Community music changes the world

Country music, folk music, ethnic music are all popular types of music today and, thanks to what are called "crossover artists", they are becoming increasingly difficult to define and differentiate.

To me, ethnic or folk music is a simple style of music with its roots in a particular community. This is not commercial music, is often anonymous, and exists just as an expression of community life.

Listen to Music Soundtracks  

Relive the emotions of the movie by listening to the soundtracks

Perhaps the greatest example of how listening to movie soundtracks affects us is with the song, "My Heart Will Go On", the theme from the blockbuster movie, "Titanic". This may forever be the song most connected to the sentiments of sorrow and finding the strength to continue on.

Although this song is not so immediately connected to the movie by the same name, "Amazing Grace" is another song that, when listened to, fills us with inspiration and hope.

Another movie soundtrack associated with love lost and inspiration found is "Braveheart". Who can listen to this music reminiscent of misty Scottish highlands and not be transported back into this saga?

Can listening to music fix the world's problems? 

A tragedy happens, a horrible situation hits the mainstream news, and musicians respond by writing a song, or gathering artists to produce a benefit album or concert. Does this really do anything to help the situation, or does it mainly benefit the egos and wallets of the celebrities involved?

Tragedies happen to people, and other people react to the causes and the aftermath, as best they can. World problems become personal problems. Too often, we feel something deeply, then tuck it away even deeper. We can't allow ourselves to live in pain forever, so if we can't get rid of it, we hide it.
