Chick lit is a controversial label for a modern genre of books, encompassing nearly all works of fiction that explore contemporary women's lives, and often written by women themselves. The label is so overreaching (or overused?) that most experts say the beloved Jane Austen - chronicler of the single 1700s woman - would today be categorized as "chick lit." As in any broad category, some chick lit books are good while others are insightful, just for fun, or just plain stupid. And, of course, reading is a personal experience and everyone has their own opinion on whether or not a book is good. This lens focuses on the so-called chick lit that I think is good. (And I work with books, so I should know.)

The Boy I Loved Before
This book is written by Jenny Colgan, not Madeline Wickham (or her alter ego Kinsella) but they're supposed friends and it's a great read!

More Choices
Prep: A Novel
Even though the narrator is annoying, you still want to follow through her education (in life) at a New England prep school.
PS, I Love You
Cecelia Ahern is wonderful and her first novel - written when she was 22 - is sweet and, I think, perfect.
Men and Other Mammals
With a first line like "I shouldn't have stolen the penguin, I know that now," how can you not love this story of two British brothers recovering from the unexpected death of their mother?
Behaving Like Adults: A Novel
Again, a British book, and one with a little more substance than others.
The Little Lady Agency
Fun! I'm looking forward to the sequel.

First Editions
If you're seriously into chick lit, maybe you'll want to start a collection.
