Lite Brite Toys: Fun for Kids and Adults

Has there ever been a toy that you wanted when you were a kid, but just didn't get? That toy for me was a Lite Brite. My cousins had one, but my mom was a not about to pick up all those Lite Brite pegs.

Well, that was a long time ago and I have a little boy now, so I was sure HE would LOVE to have a Lite Brite. Like any "good" mom I dutifully had to show him how to play with it.....hmmm.

It was as fun as I remembered!

The only thing we discovered was that we needed more pictures and pegs. Though I hate to admit it, Mom was right, those little pegs are pretty sneaky. Many times we have had to go on a treasure hunt to the bottom of the toy box. Despite the efforts of Hasbro to make a nice bulit in container they still escape like little fugitives.

The good news is that you can buy Lite Brite refills. Oh yeah, more pegs, more pictures, and more fun!

Not All Refills Are Created Equal

Years ago there was only one size, but now there are several different models of Lite Brites. There Lite Brite Flat Screens, Lite Brite Cubes, Travel Lite Brite, and Lite FX.

Be sure to read the fine print to make sure the refill will work with your model.

Educational Toy?

I am not sure if the experts would consider a Lite Brite an educational toy, but I think it is. My son and I discuss the different colors when we are putting the pegs in the screen. For example: purple is called violet and needs to be put in the V. That leads to letter learning and with the help of a pair of scissors and some black construction paper we can reinforce the letters we have learned while having fun.

This can also be used for shapes and colors.

It also encourages creativity and if your real lucky some quiet play time.

Classic Lite Brite Refills

The Classic Lite Brite Toy

Though I have found many versions of the Lite Brite for this lens I could not find a new classic version. The classic version had a 9 inch by 12 inch rectangle screen. I did find a one on eBay but nothing worthy of adding the module.

So, if you are lucky enough to find one, there are plenty of refills availble.

Which I think is a little silly to have the refills and not the toy, but who am I to say?

    This was one of my favorite toys, one we wanted our children to enjoy..only thing was trying to find the refills! I think we can still enjoy some Lite Bright fun with the right refills! Thanks for a great kens!

    This really takes me back, Kim. I think Lite Brite was one of THE most popular toys when I was a kid. Glad to see they are still around.
