As Told By Chessie The Tabby Cat

Are you in the mood for some feline gossip? Well, come on and gather your tails around the litterbox and I'll give you the scoop on what it is like to try to train a couple of humans and co-exist with another cat in the house. For the two legged critters reading this gathering around the litterbox is much like what you humans do when you stand around the water cooler at work. It is where the best tales are told.

In the Owens litter, I'm the baby and let me tell you it is not easy being the youngest. Well, sometimes it isn't all that bad because my humans do tend to spoil me a little more. All I have to do is look cute or give out a pitiful little mew and I can usually get just about anything I want. Especially from the dominant male human. Patches (the other feline of the litter) and I have him pretty well trained. We can usually get him to give us extra treats when the dominant female human isn't looking. He is a real softy!

Since cats are not known for their typing skills, I convinced the dominant female human to type this for me. You all know her as Bev or maybe even BevsPaper around here. Patches and I just call her Mommy.

How I Came To Adopt The Owens Family

A Tale Of Rescue

Baby Photo Of Chessie The Tabby CatI adopted the two humans that go by the name of Owens when I was just a little kitten. My real Mom, the feline one, lived in a pretty bad situation. Her humans never got her spayed and so the poor cat just kept getting pregnant. Sophie, my real Mom, didn't want us to grow up like she had to so one day she called us all to her and said, "Come on kids, I'm going to see if I can find you a new home." She was a smart cat and she made regular visits to the nice humans in the neighborhood. So off we went following Mom with our little tails straight in the air.

We stopped at this house and the nicest human man bent down and petted Mom and said, "Well, Sophie what have you got here?" And then he called into the house, "Bev, honey we have visitors!"

When this human called Bev walked out the door I knew this was the home I wanted to live in. So I started working my kitten magic right away. I meowed in my cutest voice and rubbed up against the female's leg. Batted my little eyes and stretched up as far as I could on her leg. Oh when she picked me up and scratched me behind my ears, I was one happy little kitten. The other humans that I had come in contact were just too rough!

I'll cut this tale a little short and just say that after 3 visits to the Owens house, I convinced them to let me adopt them. This is one of my baby pictures that my human Mom took on the first day I came to live with her.

My Name Is Chessie:

After I adopted the Owens couple they named me Chessie. They say it is because they think I look like the famous feline who advertised a railroad called the Chesapeake And Ohio. My human Mom really likes old paper with advertising on them. Me, I like to shred it with my claws. Hint to the felines reading this...Humans don't like it much when you shred their paper!

Patches The Other Feline Of The House

Patches My Big Sister

I share the house with another feline. She actually adopted the Owens family first and didn't much like it when I adopted them too. She is pretty bossy and has this attitude that SHE is the Queen around here. She is a big tattletale too! I can't figure out how she does it but she gets the attention of the humans of the litter by turning on this buzzer thing on the stove with her teeth. She won't show me how to do it, either. She flicks her tail from side to side and tells me to get lost!

This picture is of her giving me the evil eye as she says, "Kid you have gotten on my last nerve! I'm calling the humans in on this one!" And then she jumps up and makes that buzzer thing sound. I've learned to take off running and I try to hide but Patches leads them to me every single time.

Don't get me wrong, the humans aren't mean to me when I've been bad. They put on that serious face and shake their fingers at me. I usually just roll over and do that cute cat face and all is forgiven.

Addendum to the story: Patches went away and now I am alone in the house with the two humans. Mom has been sad and I heard her say something about Patches crossing a rainbow bridge. I don't know what that means, I just know that she isn't here anymore. I have been trying to be even cuter so that I can get a giggle out of Mom once in a while.

Clumping Litter For The Litter Box

Patches and I are both very finicky when it comes to the litter used in our litterbox. We particularly like the brand below. It is soft on our paws. When our humans tried to use a different brand the granules were too large and sharp and they hurt to walk on. Bev, our dominant female human, likes that it clumps quickly and hard for easy removal.

Tabby Is A Coat Feature Not A Breed

Most humans think that Tabbies are a breed of cat but we aren't. Being a tabby means that we have stripes, spots, or swirling patterns on our coats. We also usually have an M mark on our foreheads. Tabby markings can occur on many different breeds of cats.

Let A Cat Adopt You

Not every cat is lucky enough to walk up to a human's door and convince them to be adopted. There are so many feline's out there who would love to accept you as a part of their litter. Let one pick you out.

If I could have some art near my litterbox....

If my humans would let me have art hanging near my litterbox, I would want the poster below. Unfortunately, for me and Patches there are no mice in our house for us to hunt down. I don't think I would hunt them anyway, I would rather play with one. If I could talk to the little mouse in this artwork, I would tell it not to play with that shiny red ball hanging on that tree. The humans don't like it one bit when you knock them off so that you can play the game "roll the shiny thing on the floor".

Feeding Dish To Be Kept Away From The Litterbox

I've been trying to tell the Dominant Female that I would like a new feeding dish. She doesn't seem to be getting the hint, though. How hard is it for her to understand since I keep turning my current bowl over? Sometimes the humans aren't very smart. Anyway, if I could go shopping myself; I would pick this dish with the fish. I will say that my humans do understand that I don't want to eat near my litterbox.

Have You Got A Tale To Tell At The Litterbox?

Mom and I are sure glad you stopped by to hear our tale. Tell us your story about the feline or canine who adopted you, we would love to hear it. Hey, want to play roll the golf ball with me? If we get it stuck under something, all we have to do is meow real loud and Mom will come get it for us. I have her trained pretty well to fetch things for me. What has your cat trained you to do?

I am back because Lady Ghost Whispurr said she wants this lens lensrolled to her lens. She a bit insistent at times and so I try to comply. She is also appalled that this purple star lens has slipped under the radar. Cat stories should be primary reads for humans she said. So since I can't Squidlike it again, I'll send it to FB.

Very cool lens! Those kitties look so sweet! I just love cats, but we currently have a dog that doesn't like cats, so no cats for us. Thanks for putting together such a great lens!

Greetings Chessie from LadyGhost and Wiley. They wanted me to tell you that they have trouble training their humans too. Wiley has come up with a good communication system. He leaves little strips of paper or "telegrams" next to whatever needs, such as clean water or more catnip on the scratcher. I'm just hoping Wiley doesn't learn to turn anything on the stove. That sounds really dangerous. Just keep being as cute as you are, and you'll have a great life.

Chessie writes so well! I loved the story. Congratulations on your Purple Star honor, Chessie -- and be sure to give Bev some credit for typing your story for you.
