The problem: Litter and Fly Tipping

I am passionate about not littering. As long as I can remember I have been against the littering of our streets and countryside and the tipping of waste. Maybe it was my upbringing that whenever I had a piece of litter I would ether find a bin to put it in or take it home with me to dispose of there. I never wanted to litter up the land I was enjoying.

Yet all around me I see litter, old cans, sweet wrappers, left over sandwiches and paper. I still cannot understand why the need to just drop it where you finished using it. We have a beautiful land why destroy it and often wildlife in the process by making it such a mess?

This page explores the problem of litter and flytipping.

I welcome you to take part in the polls and discussion.

Thank you

Litter-Its not pretty

I spotted this littering today while out shopping. I cannot understand why people would want to "decorate" a pole like this. The people at the store do their best to tidy it up but this is a frequent occurance...

Why do people need to be Litterbugs?

The Effects Of Litter On Wildlife

Death by litter for our wild animals and birds.

Litter is always unpleasant to look at but there is a more serious side for nature. Litter poses a threat to all wildlife. Small creatures and birds can reach in to plastic wrappers and bags enticed by the old food smells and then suffocate to death. Some litter is toxic to them. Animals can get cut and entangled on carelessly thrown away items and without treatment cuts can get infected and lead to serious illness and death. Some never escape being tangled up in litter and die a slow death. Animals both on land and in the sea can try to eat the litter which may swell inside them and cause death.

When something is so avoidable it never ceases to amaze me that it is such a problem.

Litter And Marine Wildlife
From the site: Marine litter has a major impact on wildlife through entanglement and ingestion. It is estimated that. globally. over 100.000 marine mammals die every year from entanglement. or ingestion of plastics (Wallace 1985).

Our litter poses a threat to all wildlife.

Littering Nature

This upsets me most of all. A lovely scene destroyed by a littered plastic bag. Not only unsightly but also potentially dangerous to wildlife.

Are Kids The Worst Litter Bugs?

Often kids are blamed for the tide of litter on our streets, sweet wrappers, cans, half eaten food..but are children mostly to blame for all the litter or is it the adults?

Kids are the worst litter bugs

Adults are as much or more to blame for litter

BevsPaper says:

I see many more adults tossing litter than I do children.

Spook says:

Kids want to please you so will follow your example

aj2008 says:

Adults are worse because they should know better.

Spook says:

They follow the parents lead and within the experiences of my life, they also are so keen to please you. It stands to reason therefore that nothing could be simpler than giving them this.

kab says:

The cigarette butts really frost my flakes. I see people throw them on the ground when there is a receptacle for them five feet away. How lazy can you be?

Fly-tipping ("sneaky dumping"http://www.word-detective.com/040503.html#fly%20tipping or "dumping on the fly"http://www.translationdirectory.com/glossaries/glossary014_f.htm) is a British term for illegally dumping waste somewhere else than in an authorised landfill. It is the illegal deposit of any waste onto land, i.e., waste dumped or tipped on a site with no licence to accept waste.Fly tipping and the law a guide for the public, Crimereduction.co.ukNational Fly-tipping campaign run by the Countryside Alliance

Litterbin

Clearly the most appropriate place for litter is to either take it home with us or to use a litter bin.

Question is are there enough litter bins available for people to use?

Thanks for linking to my photos. I've lots of suggestions which I make on my Flickr pages. And would welcome many more.

You're right to stress education - and not just for children and young people. One of the depressing aspects of dumped and littered towns and countryside is the bad examples they set for the next generation. Though at the same time, i'm optimistic because I find a high proportion of young people both aware and concerned about the environment and the wider 'green' issues.

I'm also positive about the possible solutions. Litter, dumping and commercial fly-tipping will reduce the more we turn 'waste' into 'value' by recycling.

Great lens! When I was a little girl (many moons ago) there was a $100 fine for littering. Back then that was a lot of money for a fine. My Mom was just terrified of that fine and so would lecture us about littering and reminding us that she DID NOT have that kind of money. It worked, though. We didn't and still don't litter.

I can remember the first "Keep Britain Tidy" campaign in the 60s, which is when I learnt not to be a "litter lout"! I want to see leaves on trees - not plastic bags.

Blessings to you from this countryside loving Angel.

Oh I see, fly tipping is an English term. Works since litter can attract flies. I think we in the U. S. should go harsh and call these people litter louts.
