Tips on how to litter box train your dog.

There are many good reasons to litter box train your small dog. Here are a few tips and tricks to help you along the way!

We live on the second floor and have a Shih-tzu and a Chihuahua. Taking the dogs outside to go potty would entail going up and down the steps, which are to much for the chihuahua to manage, and subjecting them to the sometimes harsh elements of Michigan.

Other reasons include: An elderly or disabled person who may have a difficult time getting their pet outside in time to do their business. An elderly or disabled pet might benefit from going inside. Or a pet who may have to be left alone inside for several hours.

Whatever the reason, teaching your dog to use a potty inside can be fairly easy but also takes time and dedication. It may not be for everyone..or every dog.

There are many different products and methods that can be used to train the dog. My feeling is that whatever works best for you IS probably the best. This info is based on my experience, I would recommend reading other articles, in addition to this one, to decide what is best for you and your pet.

My dogs use a large litter pan made especially for dogs. It has high sides and an opening on one end for easy access. There is specialized "dog litter" that you can use with a litter pan. I tried the litter and it didn't work for me. It was messy, in my opinion, and difficult to clean up. Some people like to use old newspapers. My method is simple, just line the pan with a puppy pad. With a little research, on the internet and at you local stores, you can find puppy pads (or even people pads) at a reasonable price. When the pad is soiled (I usually change the pad about 3 times a day) I just pick it up by the corners and dispose of it. A couple times a week, I clean the pan itself with a little lysol and water to keep it fresh.

Training a puppy to use the litter is much like training a kitten. Dedication and a little common sense go a long way.

-Try to recognise when your pet needs to "go" and take him to the litterbox promptly

-Praise him when he uses the litter pan

-At times when you are unable to keep a close eye on your pet enclose him in an area with enough room for the litter pan, a place to sleep and some food and water.

-If you catch your pet soiling outside of the litterbox firmly tell him No and take him to the pan, if he uses it praise him.

-Never hit your dog for having an accident. Accidents will happen during training. A firm voice does the job and speeds up the training process

-Discourage your pet from sleeping or playing in the litter pan. Let them know the litter box is only for doing their business.

With some discipline and patience, house training can be very rewarding for both you and your pet.

There are many ways to reward your dog for a "job well done".
Praise him with your voice and a nice scratch behind the ears. Tell them they are a good boy or girl and act excited that they went in the potty.

Accident Cleaning Tips....

In the beginning there are going to be little messes to clean up. Never hit your dog for having an accident a firm No will let your dog know that you mean business. Here are a few useful tips for soaking it up and keeping your house smelling fresh.

* Soak up the mess with a towel or paper towels.

* Rinse the area with water to dilute any left over urine.

* Blot again using clean towels.

* Stand on the towels to help soak up moisture.

* Apply a cleaner/neutralizer formulated for pet messes such as Simple Solution.

* If stains remain, try another commercial stain remover formulated for pet stains.

* Do not use ammonia, it smells similiar to urine.

* Be sure to clean the area surrounding the visible stain. Messes will soak downward and spread.

* If you are able to pull up the carpet, clean the carpet pad beneath the affected area.

* If possible, use a steam vac to clean the carpet.

* If a stain reappears on the surface of the carpet a few days later, dilute the stain with water and clean again.

* Commercial cleaners usually advise that you test a carpet's color fastness before applying a product to clean a spot. Do this by applying a small amount on a hidden part of the carpet, wait 24 hours to see if the carpet has changed color. Of course, you don't want to delay cleaning up urine, feces, vomit or other organic stain so test products right after you buy them, instead of waiting until you actually need to use them.
