Little Athletics - Writing Sprints

Little Athletics writing sprints are fun activities led by Heather Blakey, who built the Soul Food Cafe from scratch and who manages Global Teacher, a web publishing platform. Soul Food was built on the premise of making writing a daily practice and these activities are designed to be done in quick, single sessions. They are currently being successfully used with students of all levels at Reservoir East Primary School.

Newspaper Headlines

look in to the crystal ball and see the newspaper headlines

To lead this session simply get the students to sit quietly and focus on four boxes, drawn on the board. Talk about the nature of headlines and what their role is in the daily newspaper. Ask students to close their eyes and imagine being twenty years old. Tell them that they have made the headlines in the newspapers. Have them come up with headlines. Grade 2-3 at Reservoir East came up with some of the following headings.

Rhys The Clone Trooper
Chamika The Super Hero
Stefan Wins The World Cup
Geska The Supermodel
Kelly Wins The Grand Slam
Taylor The Supermodel.

Once you have the headlines in place set out a page using a newspaper format, including space for a photograph. Write the news story that would appear.

To extend this activity have students imagine the news report that might appear when they are thirty years of age and again at forty.

The Great Bug Escape

Grade 2/3 Reservoir East Primary School

In this activity children undertake a guided imagery. They walk in to a huge palace and find themselves in a marble floored room where there is nothing but a Magic Mirror. When they look in the mirror they find that they have been turned into a bug and transported into a lunch box in a school room. The lunch bell rings and the challenge is to escape before the hand reaches in and finds them.

Some responses:

One day I walked to a palace. I looked in the mirror and found I was an ant. I crawled into a lunchbox. She ate her food then she caught me. She had me in her hand and I crawled on to her face and kissed her. Then I crawled onto the floor and ran away.

Then suddenly I heard footsteps coming towards the lunch box. Then I saw a hand. Then it was going inside the lunchbox. I saw a hole and crawled through it.

One day I walked into a big room in a palace. In this room there was a magic mirror. When I looked in the mirror I saw I had become a bug. The next thing I knew I was in someone's lunch box. I fell on a chocolate bar. I climbed off the chocolate bar and then I saw the lid of the lunch box go away. Someone is opening the lid. Oh oh! The person is moving the lunch box now and I'm on his lunch. He grabbed me and I nearly got eaten by him but he wasn't going to eat the lunch. He put it in his bag and left his bag open. So I went through that small little space and flew away.

Dream Catcher

students at Reservoir East meet the Dream Catcher and capture dreams

As I was riding a dream passed by. I saw horses flying up in the sky with no eyes. I was called Jasmine. I was brown and had straight black hair. My eye colour is blue. I live on a farm with my friends. I saw a horse with sharp teeth. It had fire coming out of its mouth so my horse and I ran very fast so I got on the horse. Then the horse was flying and it had wings so my horse and I got a bomb and killed that horse.
Serene

As I was riding a horse I saw a dream. Lots of horses were talking to each other on a high hill where there was a huge stable. The colours of the horses were blue, white, brown, yellow, green, black, red, purple and pink.
I was climbing the hill. I got to the top of the hill. Everything went black and white except for the horses they were colourful.

I continued walking. I saw big writing in the sky. It said 'EVIL THINGS'. I didn't know that if any one goes under or past those words he will go to another would. Any way I went under it. Then I went to another would and I said to myself I have to find the way out or I will be stuck here forever in my dream. I was looking for a house for me to sleep in then I saw a house I knocked on the door and no one was answering it. So, then I went in and the first thing happened to me is one golden sent I said woo and I was just about to pick it up and then I heard a noise saying don't pick it up don't do it then I got scared my body started shaking then I picked it up the cent and run as fast as I could out said then I saw a face on the cent it was talking. He side if you put me back on the house where I belong I will help you find the way out. I said ok , I was so tired then I blinked I saw my self on my bed and I heard a noise saying I am the dream catcher helping you in hear. When I waked up in the morning I told my parents about the dream catcher but they didn't believ me. So, then I didn't care.
Sara

As I fell asleep I was riding my white horse Vanessa in the land of dreams I saw a big black dark and scary house. Then I heard something it was an owl high up in a tall bushy tree. Then I heard something else. I turned around and saw a little man. He wore a small green funny hat and a long green ripped gowned with old wrinkly feet, pointy fingers and a long pointy stick. I said who are you? He replied I and dream catcher elf. Well why are you here I said. I am here to catch your dreams. How do you catch dreams I mean you're a little tiny elf. I use my wand and the top comes off and sucks up the dream and goes into a little glass ball. Then he said do you know the master of dreams? I looked at him and replied no who is he? He controls all dreams people have. Where is he? I asked curiously. He is in a castle not that far away form here said the little elf. Can we go and see him? I asked NO WAY! are you insane? Squealed the little elf. I said well why not? Because he is very powerful and he doesn't like people coming to his castle. Ok I said disappointedly fine well go then said the elf. When we got there the castle.
Danielle

When I lay my head upon my pillow. I start to dream the most pleasant dreams. With the dream catcher at my side to help me. With those unacceptable dreams that I just cannot allow. When the dream catcher is around I cannot be hurt. By those unpleasant dreams. That I don't very much like. He is a tall man with a blue cap. In a blue suit as well as that. Just like a cleaner. But different, He uses his magic mop to take those nightmares away, and I have pleasant dreams all the way. I sleep like a log with my dream catcher. He is the best dream catcher in the world.
Michael

Every night I have a dream catcher/ wacker. He always hits the bad dreams away. But one day the leader of the bad called bad dreams came. He took my dream catcher/ wacker and took him into a night mare world. I woke up in fear and saw a black hole and jumped through it. I became small as a mouse. I saw millions and millions of bad dreams in the world. I saw a bad dream it was scary so I ran. I was looking for my dream catcher/ wacker when I fell over his stick. I said
"Lucky I took karate than boxing"
So I picked the stick up and waked on. I found you. I said
"can you get me down."
I used the stick to cut him down. I handed the him stick to my dream catcher/ wacker. We ran back to the black hole. We were almost there then the bad dreams guy came "you will never get out." he tried to stop us but we had a fight. He brings his dog and I had to fight the dog it was hard. My dream catcher fought the bad dreams it was hard too. We just ran past them. We went back to my room. We went to bed and my dream catcher went back to work.

Description of my dream catcher:
He flies
He has a stick
A skull head
A big black hood
Bone hands
And he's small

Santa Letter With A Special Twist

Write a letter to Santa, explaining how good the people who are close to you have been. Then make a list of the things you want Santa to bring to each of these people.

For example, Ms Green asked for a new memory for herself, a magic report writer and some energy to survive 2009. Ms Stott requested that a painting elf come and finish the painting at her house and has asked that Santa bring a tidying elf to help out Ms Green.

Fatima has asked that Santa make sure that her family have a wonderful and vibrant life. She would like a ride on his sleigh to discover a world of wonder. She would also like a tiny person to talk to and be buddies with and really wants a magical little book to write stories in.
