Little Green Thumbs: Gardening For Kids

Ranked #8,394 in Home & Garden, #103,071 overall

Kids In The Garden

Kids love the idea of planting seeds and watching them grow. They're intrigued with the idea of 'Magic Beans'. To a child, it is magic when a tiny little seed turns into a carrot or a tomato plant and as parents, the best thing we can do is cultivate that magical feeling.

It's never too early to start teaching your kids about Green living and sustainability. But more than that, it's never too early to start teach them about good nutrition. Children are more accepting of those 'yucky' vegetables if they grow them themselves. You might be surprised at what your child will eat if he's the one in charge of the planting.

Even if you only have room for a little tabletop or windowsill garden, let your child experience the thrill of gardening. Let those little green thumbs grow!

Why Should You Teach Your Child How To Garden?

These days it's our responsibility to teach our children how to be self-sufficient. They're never too young to start learning about sustainability and Green living.

Plus, kids just naturally love playing in the dirt and if they can make something grow while they're at it, so much the better!

Your child will learn responsibility and what it means to see a project through from start to finish. He'll learn patience and he'll learn what it feels like to work toward a goal.

And let's face it. He'll have fun! Isn't that what it's all about?

Watching the progress of a growing plant from a seed was always so much fun when I was a kid. One of my favorite yearly projects in elementary was our Easter project where we took half an egg shell, potting soil, grass seed and made a clay base for the egg. We got to take it home and watch it grow. Thanks for bringing back a memory with your lens.

Enjoyed reading through your lens. My almost 2 year old grandson heads to the strawberry patch everyday looking for more strawberries. It's a fun time for all of us.
