Little House Books and Television

The Little House on the Prairie television show ran from 1974 to 1983. When I was a kid, I remember reading the books by Laura Ingalls Wilder. They were originally published in 1935, but when the TV show ran, they were very popular. People even dressed in prairie skirts and dresses at the time. You don't hear about the Little House books as much, now that the television show is over, but they still are great to pass down to your children. The Little House on the Prairie television series is now on DVD, and is an excellent set to buy if you want to give your children something wholesome to watch.

Why Pass These Books Down to Your Kids?

I started reading the Little House on the Prairie books to my daughter when she was four. We started off with Little House in the Big Woods. Since both she and Laura were four at the beginning of the book, she was able to relate to the characters.

As we continued reading, Laura got older, and my daughter got a little bit older. We read about Indians on the prairie, riding in wagons, and living through a winter of heavy blizzards. As a homeschool teacher, I liked how the books meshed with some of the history lessons she was learning. We ended up reading The Long Winter right after our house caught on fire and forced us to move, and it was a way to put things into perspective, and realize that everybody goes through tough times.

I recommend passing down these books (and the videos) to your children.

If You Like Little House, Try These!

If you or your child love Little House on the Prairie, you may enjoy the Anne of Green Gables Series. The story takes place on Prince Edward Island in Canada. It begins in Laura's time, and runs all the way through World War I. My grandma recommended these books to me, and I just love them! When my daughter gets older, I will encourage her to read these. I think that one of my favorite books in this series is Rilla of Ingleside. Maybe I'll read them this summer, if I get some spare time!
