Little Joe - Project Mercury

The Little Joe was a booster rocket used by NASA to test the Launch Escape System and heat shield of the Project Mercury space capsule. It was primarily designed to save money - Redstone rockets cost about $1 million per launch, while the Little Joe could do the same job for 1/5 the cost. It's an interesting part of the Mercury Project and also makes a fun model rocket. Dr. Zooch makes an "ant scale" kit that stands about 13" tall. If you want a larger model you'll have to scratch build it, but using the Mercury capsule from a Redstone kit would make it an easy project.

Modeling the Little Joe

Building your own Little Joe rocket is fun...

Building your own model of the Little Joe would be a fun project. The only commercially available model "ant scale" kit from Dr. Zooch that measures a little under 13" tall. If you want a larger model you'll have to scratch build it. The capsule would be challenging to build, but you could use the Mercury Capsule from a Mercury Redstone kit. CJS Aviation (formerly Sheri's Hot Rockets) has a 1/24 scale kit of the Mercury Redstone; using the capsule from that kit would result in a model about 25" tall. Another option would be to get a Little Joe II kit and modify the Apollo Capsule to resemble a Mercury Capsule and any other necessary changes to make it look like a Little Joe. Of course that would change the scale - not a big deal if you're only modeling one or the other but it sure would be nice if kits (or at least parts) were available to build both the Little Joe and Little Joe II to the same scale.
