So excited to find this great resource! Just got a copy of LH-Big Woods & LHonthePrairie from paperbackswap. Just holding the books inmy hands brought back great memories:) What age would you recommend for these studies? My dd just turned 5. (Planning on using a mainly CM/AO education) Thanks for all of this great work!!!!

I tried to gather a variety of activities, so children of all ages can enjoy it. A five year old can most certainly get a lot out of activities that go along with Little House, but they may need help to do them. Some fun activities that a 5 year old might enjoy especially could be some of the cooking activities like making butter. Yes, they will need help, but it will be rewarding. :)

I've never used this before but I suppose it would work well for teaching about farm life and the countryside.

My daughter loved the Little House books! She learned some of the music from a Little House songbook, and wanted to cook like Ma did from a Little House cookbook. :)

I love the Little House books! Little House On The Prairie was the first book I ever checked out of the school library. This lens makes me wish I could repeat the 3rd grade all over again.

I tried rewatching the TV show as an adult but couldn't after seeing the first few episodes and pilot where Caroline makes some racial slurs. The books though keep a special place in my heart. I love how book publishers have extended the love by creating picture books and beginning chapter books based on the original series. Oh, and of course like every good Missouri girl, I've been to Rocky Ridge Farm, her home in Mansfield, MO, where she wrote all the books. (Plus, it has Pa's fiddle.)

I loved both reading these books and watching the television series. I remember being truly horrified that one winter they came so close to starving they had t eat their horse. Really a great lens about that era and Little house.

I remember reading the books as a child. And I loved the TV show. We sure don't see programs like that anymore which is too bad.

This is a wonderful lens! My Granddaughter (4 1/2 years old) is really into the Little House on the Prairie! I love it too, and have been reading the books after her Mom reads them to her. She "reads" them herself by telling stories that she knows about them, as she slowly flips the pages. I'm going to bookmark this and get back to it for some excellent Christmas gifts! Super ideas!!!!

You might be interested in reading my mother's book, My Flint Hills Childhood: Growing Up in 1930s Kansas. It would show a different era than the Little House books yet in the same locale and topics of interest.

I love Little House on the Prairie! We used a workbook called Little House in the Classroom that goes through 7 of the books, and covers most subjects along the way. In fact...we did it twice!
  • desertgirl Oct 12, 2009 @ 9:25 pm | delete
Great ideas! My daughter and I love Little House on the Prairie too, so I created a lens on a Lttle House on the Prairie themed birthday party. Maybe you could check it out and tell me what you think!

I wish I had this two years ago when we read the entire series. Nice job which I am sure will be useful to many people. I am adding it the Language plexo at Homeschool Fun. Don't forget to vote for it.

I grew up with this TV show, and loved it. It's nice to see it get some recognition again, and a unit study on life in those times is a great idea.

What a lovely subject, this takes me back. The books are something special plus a 5* lens to go with them!

I think most people think about the Little House books as being for girls. Boys enjoy them, too! There are so many activities you can do with a Little House unit study. Boy, do I miss homeschooling!
