Baseball Drills

Baseball drills are a very important part of the baseball training. It is vitally important to work at drills on a regular basis. This will ensure your technique is constantly being improved and any problems that you may have in your playing style and technique can be addressed.

It is not always easy to know where your weaknesses are until you break your game down into components and work on drills for each. Regardless of your age, experience and playing level, these exercises will pin point your strengths and weaknesses and go a long to improving the areas where things are not too good. A good coach will have a wide choice of drills which he will be able to set for players so that, not only will you improve your game, but also, he will be able to see where your strengths and weaknesses lie. This is important for him when making team structure decisions.

It is vital that the coach has a planned and organised attitude towards drills. It can be very time wasting when you are at practice if the coach has to start thinking about how best to improve aspects of your game. He will probably have a book and, no doubt, a head full of drills. These will have been picked up over his years of experience and I am sure that he will remember using them at various points when he was being coached himself. There are very few drills which a coach has devised himself. He may well have modified some quite a lot, but most of them will be ones that he has seen other coaches using or ones that he has used when training. Coaches are always on the look out for new drills which they can use for their own team.

If you are the coach of a small team and do not have a huge store of drills already in your head, the internet is a wonderful tool for you. There are many websites which give you detailed information on baseball drills for all the disciplines. Many of these include diagrams and some have video footage of the drills. The websites will usually break them down into hitting, bunting, base running, pitching, catching, throwing and team categories. It is very interesting to see other people's drills as you can learn all sorts of tricks. Often you will come across the old favourites time and time again, but every now and then something new will appear which you will not have considered.

As baseball drills are such an important part of training and are so essential for improving player's techniques and skills, time must always be spent in making sure that they are executed correctly. If this time is spent on the foundation of techniques then it will be so much easier to perform well in match conditions.

Get New Youth Baseball Drills From Pro Baseball Tryouts

If you are a youth baseball parent and want to add new baseball drills in order to give your child more variety then consider taking your child to a professional baseball tryout. Professional tryouts, especially open tryouts hosted by Major League and independent minor league teams, offer the average youth baseball parent a new perspective on how professional baseball really works. Your child will be exposed to the actual process of how scouts and general managers evaluate talent, and you may even get the opportunity to have your child meet actual professional baseball decision makers.

Many open professional tryouts attempt to determine the physical talents of the aspiring players. Scouts look for speed, arm strength, glove skills, and then they will look for hitting skills and mechanics. These tryouts are not like reality TV shows where the judges are nice and give positive feedback all the time. Instead the scouts simply call out those that they like and the rest of the players go home, many to officially end their dreams of playing professional baseball. While this may not be the dream you have for your child, consider taking your child to the tryout because it can offer your child a very real lesson: that baseball is meant to be enjoyed all the time because at some point one may have to stop playing entirely.

Here are some drills you will see used in a professional tryout, and you may wish to incorporate some of them into your own child's skill development:

* The 60-yard dash is used to determine sheer sprint speed, and it is chosen to determine the athlete's ability to run from the length of two bases. If you decide to incorporate this for your child, do so sparingly and make sure that your child is warmed up. Also reduce the length from 60 yards to only twice the distance from home to first. Of course, make sure that your child is medically approved to do sprinting. Keep the number of such dashes very low and GRADUALLY build up over time.
* Infielders have to go to the corners and throw across the field from the edge of the outfield grass. For example, first baseman go to the edge of the outfield behind first base, and then they have to throw across the field to third base. All other infielders go to the edge of the outfield grass behind third base and throw to first base.
* All outfielders go to right field and are hit fly balls. They then catch the ball and throw to third base. Scouts look at arm strength, how straight the ball is being thrown, and accuracy. If you decide to introduce this skill to your child's practice then make sure that he is warmed up and limit the number of throws in order to save his arm.
* Catchers are tested on pop-ups behind home plate and their throwing times from home plate to second base. This tests the catcher's "pop-time" in throwing out runners stealing second base. If your child is playing in a league where stealing bases is not allowed then introduce this technique gradually, and only when nearing the levels where stealing bases is permitted.
* Pitchers are asked to throw an assortment of pitches in the bullpen. Of course, your child must be medically approved to pitch, especially if you think your child is ready for curveballs and other off-speed pitches. If your child is not old enough or not medically approved to throw off-speed pitches, then work on location. Velocity will come with age, so get proper pitching instruction for your child in order to protect his arm.

When asked to hit, scouts do not look at the end result of whether the ball was a hit, home run, foul ball, etc. Instead, they look at mechanics in order to determine if there is a "loop" in a batter's swing, weight transfer, and the batter's overall approach to the plate appearance. If you are able to introduce your child to one of the scouts during a break at the tryout, ask the scout to give you a minute to understand what he likes to see in his ideal batter. You and your child may learn quite a bit.

Contact your local minor league teams or even the Major League teams and ask when there will be open tryouts in your area. Then ask the team if spectators are allowed. Assuming they allow you to attend the open tryout, bring your child and any of his teammates as well as their parents. This experience will open your eyes to how the players are evaluated and may deepen your child's desire to eat healthy and exercise because your child will know what is needed to be considered by professional baseball scouts. This knowledge then can help your child stay disciplined when exercising and practicing baseball drills.

Matt Mc Dermott was a backup and bullpen catcher for five seasons in the minor leagues, and he gave on-field lessons to kids and their parents after home games.
