Cathy Lane - Founder of Last Angel Equine Defence and The Sue Bundrick Memorial Fund for animals. My fascination with horses began when I was four...I'm still fascinated!

Candy is a 14.hh palomino, aged approx 20 years old. I rescued her six years ago. I found her on a disused piece of ground, on a housing estate. she was badly neglected. The woman who owned her didn't care about her at all, and was about to send her to a slaughterhouse. So I took her home. It took me months to even get near her, she was so defensive and mistrusting of humans. I sat in her field every day, just reading a book quietly, until one day, she finally decided it must be safe to come over to me. I gave her some carrots from my hand, and from that day on, we never looked back. Our relationship just grew and became stronger every day. She is an angel, and she has given me more than I could possibly have ever imagined.  The same is true of Alfie. He was in a terrible state when he came to me. He was from a dealer's yard, due to be slaughtered. He was terribly thin and ill at first, it took many months of veterinary treatment and tlc for him to learn that life was really ok. He nearly didn't make it, and when I think of how terrified and unwell he was at first, it makes me so angry at the people who hurt him so much. But gradually over time, he grew stronger, and now he is Candy's best friend, and mine! They are both the most beautiful creatures and proof that horses need to be given a chance. They deserve a chance!

Last Angel Equine Defence has been set up in order to help horses and ponies in the UK who are unloved, unwanted, neglected and abused. We are here to give horses that chance. We currently rehome via a network of foster carers and forever homes across the UK, but we are doing all we can to raise funds so that we can rent land and take in horses and ponies into a centralised location to be rehabilitated and rehomed.
