Snibtrap a MOAM

SnibtrapOn March 20, 2010 at 11:39 am, I was happily coding a webpage in HTML on my family PC when all of a sudden, it happened. It refers to a MOAM attack or the Mother of all Malware attacks. For all intents and purposes, let's name this one as Black19. After all if computer security companies can create malware confusion by not following any preset naming convention for the latest designer worm, virus or Trojan horse then why should I? However, I will include a list of the numerous infections found in this fully packed bundle of shear amusement. Just kidding about the amusement part but it was quite spectacular to watch the fireworks as this malware attacked my pristine and finely tweaked PC. Not to mention that the layers of security that this virus had to dupe in order to succeed was astronomical.

See this is the thing, I am a security professional that is quite experienced at cleaning up malware but usually on other users PC's not mine. Sure I have snibtrapped some minor stuff along the way but this was major and a great learning experience. I'm a firm believer that within all misfortune is fortune even if it's small. As I always tell my friends, family and clients, nobody is 100% immune to infection unless you're totally not connected to the Internet and never ever share media such as thumb drives & disks. You may wonder at this point what the term Snibtrap means so here's the definition. According to the LGK Acme Group, to snibtrap means "To prevent from escaping or getting free; to quarantine."

Securing your wireless router

How do I secure my wireless network, you ask? A few things that you must do without getting too complicated is change your administrative password on your router, change the SSID (Service Set Identifier), choose a method to secure your connection (WPA or WEP) and secure that method with a long high quality password. If your router comes with a wizard then it should be able to walk you through all these steps quite easily.

Child Safety Online

I'm Interested in Feedback concerning how parents monitor their children's Internet use. It's my humble opinion that computers are not babysitters. Children need to be taught and reminded about online safety rules. Teach your children streetsmarts online just as you would in the real world.

Do you regularly monitor your child's Internet use ?

My oldest is just getting on the computer now. I've set her computer up with parental controls to avoid her random surfing to bad pages. I also show her how to use google and how to tell if sites are legit but the most important thing my wife and I do is sit with her so we can explain things and teach her safe surfing habits. Any child left alone to learn these things is bound to have trouble even if that is limited to a virus.

Computer security is very important and should not be taken light.
