Memphis' Greatest Hits

As a life-long Memphian, I have listed five of my favorite things about living in the Bluff City. None of which are Elvis related.

1. The Barbecue

It's Why We're One of the Fattest Cities in the Country

When you think Memphis your first thought is probably Elvis. Or maybe even the Blues. But for food lovers Memphis means barbecue, and that means dry ribs. I've lived here all my 34 years and I haven't tried them all, but my pick is Corky's. Next is the Rendezvous.
If you're a tourist, visit the Rendezvous. If you're here for a while go to Corky's. You must also try a place that serves either barbecue spaghetti, barbecue nachos or both.

2. Shelby Farms

Central Park Ain't Got Nothing On Us.

It's one of the largest, if not the largest urban park in the country. With miles of hiking and biking trails, it also has several lakes to fish or go boating in. It's the perfect place to go for a picnic, watch the Buffalo or just fly a kite. Shelby Farms is truly a diamond in the rough.

3. The Memphis Zoo

Midtown's Greatest Treasure

Just a few short years ago this badly dilapidated attraction was renovated with an all new "Primate Canyon", "Cat Country" and "Northwest Passage". It's also one of the only few places in the south where you can see not one, but TWO panda bears. If you have children, make sure you visit "Once Upon a Farm" for a ride on the best train in Memphis.

4. Huey Burgers

Look Out For the Toothpicks

This one is a personal favorite. Without a doubt the best burger in Memphis, Huey's makes them thick and delicious. I'm not sure if it's the meat or the bun, but there's just something about them that makes them so good. And while you're there, look up. See all those toothpicks? Diners shoot them up there with their straws.
And if you think this picture is fake, think again. That's exactly what they look like.

5. Travel

They Don't Call it the Hub for Nothing

You can get to anywhere you want to go fairly quickly. With the I-240 loop, everything in the city is about 30 minutes from everywhere else. Missed your turn? Don't worry it will come around again.
And if you want to go to the beach, it's just a few hours south. The mountains? Just a few hours east. Casinos? Minutes away in Mississippi or Arkansas. Whatever setting you can think of can be found within a day.
