Many people cover the facts and legal aspects involved in moving to Spain,  however to get a true insight into living in Spain it is necessary to talk in depth to, or read books/articles written by, someone who has done it under the same circumstances as you will - i.e. are you moving to Spain to retire, will you be looking for work - starting a business, bringing children?

Many areas have different local customs or dialects, some make it painstakingly obviously that they are not too keen on foreigners moving in.   There are many more things to consider than will cross most people's minds when deciding to move to Spain.

Living in Spain

Fed up with high taxes, long working days, dreary weather, crime, violence and a stressful way of life, many Brits choose to move to Spain which is still the second most popular destination, next to Australia.

So you think you want to live in Spain?

As a property sales and rentals agent, we deal with many people who have decided to pack up and move to Spain. They come to us looking for property to buy, or long term rentals. Amazingly enough, many are people who have never even visited the area - some haven't even been to Spain - and yet they are prepared to leave all that is familiar and start a totally new life in a country they know very little about.

I hate to rain on anyone's parade, and dampen enthusiasm for what could be the best move they ever made, but there are many factors to consider that most people haven't given a second thought to.

Many people I have known here on the Costa Blanca have been forced to give up this excellent lifestyle for one reason or another, and return home to the UK. The main reason is money - it is extremely difficult to find work here - whatever your trade/experience.

The best advice we can give, is for anyone thinking of moving to Spain, to buy a holiday property first. Spend some time here, get to know people and how things work. If that is not an option, and they need to sell in the UK first, the next best way is to secure a long term rental before buying. A 3 bed apartment, possibly 10-15 minutes inland from the coast, can still be found for 500 euros a month.

About debbiec1

My children and I have been living in Spain for the past 6 years having moved 'blindly' into a completely new life. Very little can offer a true insight on living in Spain permanently and we had to face quite a few trials and tribulations to get where we are today.

I now run my own business, Citrus Iberia (CB) a British Estate Agents offering Property Management, holiday & long term rentals and property for sale in Spain and Calabria, Italy.

Following the sucess of our 3 Spanish offices, we have now opened a new office in Antalya, offering holiday rentals and property for sale in Turkey.

Our main website, which offers property for sale, holiday & long term rentals, and many articles on buying in Spain is Spanish Villas Spain
