WHOO FREAKIN' HOO!

Starting to Take Shape...

Yesterday Bob and I did more work on www.livinghistoryblog.com . It is SO EXCITING to see it start to take shape, to think about how people would want this place designed, and what they will use it for. We had fun going through some WWII reenactor photos I have, as well as some SCA pictures. I've been excited about the possibility of reenactors having their own blogs, and forums split by time period and reenactor club type (SCA, Wild West, Regia Anglorum, etc.)
I love the idea of building an online community--I've made some amazing friends from chatting on the Internet, and I love the way it can bring resources and people together.

Too many hobbies, or is my garage just too small?

Can two married people with two different time period interests share a storage space?

So here's the scoop--I used to be a member of the Society for Creative Anachronism, and now hubby is going full-bore in WWII reenactment. Since he also started in the SCA, that means boxes and bags and closets full of period costumes, equipment, and camping gear.

Of course, it would be easier if we both weren't total HOARDERS of 'the good stuff". Finding a great period piece for our collection, especially if we get to show it off a bit to friends, is great fun...even if it is rough on closet space.

Mommy, why is Daddy a Nazi?

Sometimes history isn't pretty, honey....

My husband recreates the life of a WWII German Heer soldier. It is tough trying to explain to the kids why Daddy's not just portraying one of the LOSERS but also a part of a vicious, tragic piece of history.

So, here's what I explain to them:

I tell them about their father's great-grandmother, who was a German Jew. She fled Germany before WWII, but every member of her family who stayed died in the camps.

We recreate the bad parts of history so we never forget--those who died, those who suffered, and those who made them suffer.

We recreate history so we celebrate the victories, whether it was in a battle, or in a family.

Someone has to be 'the bad guy'....so we never forget.

Clothing For the Reenactor

Can't just run to Sears for shoes, doncha know....

I love the talent and originality people use to make or find their costumes when they are reenactors! Whether is a full suit of armor, a Lakota pair of mocasins, or a Civil War pair of trousers, costuming can be a challenge and a triumph. My hats are off to those intrepid souls who figure out what our ancestors used to wear, and who help those of us who are CLUELESS to look good when we're recreating a piece of history.

About HometownRealtor

Who's behind Hometown Expert.ORG?

My name is Tanya Clapshaw, and I've been buying and selling houses for over 20 years, sometimes as a realtor, sometimes as a for-sale by owner, and sometimes as a client. I started out as an agent in my early 20s in Oregon, before I was even a homeowner. My clients taught me as much as I taught them, and some of those early clients are still good friends of mine! I went on to other things, worked for a large company for years, then took some time off when my husband passed away. Later, I remarried and went from being single to suddenly having a new hubby, two small stepchildren, and a baby on the way! We moved to a neighboring state and we've enjoyed buying and selling houses, including flipping real estate, and helping others buy and sell their own homes. We moved three times in five years--that's four different addresses!

Now that the kids are a little bit older, I'm excited to be back working as a Realtor ® with Keller Williams Premier Partners in Vancouver, Washington. I love their philosophy - God First, Family Second, Business Third!  Their dedication to education, ethics, and a family culture really suits me, and I feel so fortunate to be part of the KW team.
