Living Wheat Free, how and why

Find inspriation, recipes and resources. You can do it, and feel better! No matter why you're living wheat free, find help, books and more here.

Why Go Wheat Free?

Some people are just wheat intolerant, some are truly allergic. Others began by following a low carb diet and were amazed when the grain-induced fog lifted!

Feeling tired and sluggish in the afternoon may be caused by your diet; changing your diet just might solve the problem.

Still others hold the belief that humans just aren't meant to eat grains, that we can't really digest them properly. This is sometimes called the ancient diet or the paleolithic diet.

Whatever your reasons are, welcome, and here are a lot of links, recipes and ideas for you!

But What About Cake?

Baking is such a challenge, especially for families dealing with mulitple allergies.

Let's face it, wheat is just a terrific ingredient for baking! So, solutions! Check out the Healthy-Family.org blog for recipes.

For those who can tolerate tiny amounts of wheat, angel food cake uses a tiny, tiny amount of flour. It's on my list to try it with an alternative flour.

But I Miss Cookies!

Luckily, there are more and more wheat free products out there that aren't awful.

Enjoy Life cookies are pretty good, especially if you haven't had a real cookie in a long, long time. Lots of people like Nana's.

Sometimes it's a good idea to just accept, "okay, I can't eat that," and find an alternative that isn't trying to be something that it's not. For example, macaroons are a cookie that are naturally wheat free.

Jennie's brand has only two ingredients: coconut and honey!

I have only found one brand of cookies that really taste like cookies to me: Pamela's Products brand. They are made with rice flour. The cookies are a bit crumbly, but overall, a much better texture than other brands.

What to Eat Instead

The hardest thing for me about going wheat free has been giving up sandwiches! They're portable and easy to eat!

These "spring roll" wraps, available in Asian grocery stores, allow you to make your own wraps and finally have a portable lunch option.

I don't know if you've noticed, but rice cakes don't travel well!

More suggestions: tuna salad or chicken salad in a bowl, soup.

If you've got a great lunch tip, please post a comment below!

An Ice Cream Maker of Your Very Own!

If your diet also prevents you from eating refined sugar and/or dairy, it can be difficult to impossible to find a frozen treat you can eat. Make your own substitutions with this terrific Cusinart appliance.

Use it to make frozen slushy type drinks as well as ice cream.

Gluten Free and Proud! Tell the world!

Eating Fresh!

As you begin to go wheat free, and your choices of foods are severely limited, you may notice that you begin to eat more fruits and vegetables, if only because there's very little else to eat!

The good part about this is that eating foods closer to the source, as unprocessed as possible, is what's best for all of us anyway.

Dining Out

is always a challenge

For those who are Celiac, dining out is all but impossible, I know. For those who are merely wheat intolerant or avoiding wheat, it can be inconvenient.

Sticking to meat and vegetables is one easy option. Many items can be ordered without the bread. And breakfast joints are pretty safe, depending on what you orderl

Best Snack Bars for Emergency Food

For those avoiding wheat and other ingredients, life gets complicated. And if you're also avoiding artificial ingredients, yikes, finding a quick snack or meal on the run is impossible!

I've found it's really helpful to always have at least one emergency bar for times like those. If you can have nuts, a stash of your favorite is a great idea.

The best wheat free snack bars I've found are:

KIND bars from Peaceworks
These are basically dried fruit and nuts.

The Think line of bars
The Think Organic line is basically nuts and dried fruit. The Think Thin line are tasty, but they contain soy, so careful if you're also avoiding soy.

Larabars (Cashew Cookie is the best)

    Hi jenjak,

It can be really hard to transition, but the free support group below can help a lot. Really nice people who will teach you things about nutrition and health that may surprise you - but keep an open mind. You won't be feeling deprived if you follow their advice. Also if you are wheat/gluten sensitive your kids likely are too - there is a strong heriditary component.

I found out about a year and a half ago that I am wheat intolerant. I have struggled so much with this. I had horrible stomach problems for 16 years before I found out why, and I'm only 27. I have two young children and a husband who like pasta, bread, and lots of other wheaty stuff. I need help. I know if I eat gluten free I feel so much better physically. But, I also feel deprived.
