Livorno: Port City on the Coast of Tuscany

Livorno, Italy, is Tuscany's third largest city and is the capital of the province of Livorno. It is also referred to as Leghorn in English. Its origins date back to the 15th century and it is a port city of note.

Livorno is Italy's most culturally diverse city, settled by Moors from Spain and Portugal, Roman Catholics from England, and Jews, amongst others. You'll find Roman Catholic churches, Jewish synagogues, and Greek Orthodox churches alongside one another. Apart from its diverse religious buildings, Livorno also has interesting features such as a canal system, fortresses, and a stone walkway built right along the coast.

Livorno: What to See & Do

Attractions in Livorno, Italy

LivornoRenowned as a port city, Livorno is often regarded as simply a point of departure for Corsica and Sardinia, but it has much to offer to those who venture there. Livorno is picturesque; the coastal road "Viale Italia" provides vistas of the sea, ferries and surrounding hills. Its canal system, which connects to the Arno River, makes it somewhat of a "piccola Venezia" and the area is known as the Venice district.. The Old Fort and the New Fort, dating back to the 16th century, are worth a visit -- crumbling, moted structures in Livorno's port. La Piazza della Repubblica and Via Grande are also worth seeing. Other local attractions include a zoological park and an aquarium.

Livorno: La Terrazza

La Terrazza - Livorno, Italy

Livorno's stone walkway, "la terrazza", is a must-see for any traveler to Tuscany. Situated along the sea, it provides an ideal location for a stroll. The pungent salt smell from the Ligurian Sea and the melodies of the local musicians who dot the grassy knolls will make you wonder why tourists don't flock here.
