Exquisite Lladro Figurines and the History of the Company who Produced Them

When one thinks of collecting figurines, there are hundreds of companies to choose from, including many who have been in production for decades or even centuries. For contemporary figurines, however, one cannot go wrong in collecting Lladro figurines. Lladro is a premier porcelain company in Spain known worldwide for producing exquisite handmade porcelain figures.

From small, relatively inexpensive figurines to huge, multifaceted, expensive pieces, there is something for every Lladro collector's pocketbook and taste. No matter what piece you buy, the quality and workmanship is beyond compare.

This article will introduce you to the wonderful variety and beauty of Lladro, as well as present some history of this marvelous company. Come see for yourself.

The History of Lladro

Lladro shepherdessAfter years of working to develop kilns capable of firing their porcelain art works, Lladro was founded in 1953 by three Spanish brothers, Jose, Juan and Vicente Lladro. Their first retail store opened in Valencia, Spain, in 1955, followed by the opening of their first factory in Tavernes Blanques in 1958. From these humble beginnings, Lladro has grown to be an internationally recognized porcelain company with retail stores all around the world.

Their factory at Tavernes Blanques, Spain, has grown into a complex known as "The Porcelain City" where the brothers established art workshops to train future Lladro artists and pass on their knowledge of producing incredible works of art. The Professional Training School, began in 1962, is still in operation today.

Famous Lladro Blue Flower Mark

Lladro markSome early Lladro pieces had no mark at all. Later pieces from the 1960s had an impressed mark.

Lladro first began using its famous blue flower mark about 1970. According to Peggy Whiteneck, author of "Collecting Lladro Identification and Price Guide," the flower mark "...is a stylized amalgam of the Spanish bellflower and an ancient alchemical symbol and is meant to represent the marriage of art and science in the creation of Lladro porcelain."

The first issue of the stamp left off the accent on the O, so a corrected version was issued about 1974. Prior marks used from the 1960 to 1970 were impressed marks that stated "Lladro Espana" or "Lladro Made in Spain."

About 1977, a third version of the blue flower mark was issued which included the copyright symbol and DAISA, which is an acronym for the company which holds the Lladro intellectual property and design rights.

In 1984, the copyright date was added, as well as the 4 digit model number.

In 1990, the typeface was revised and the LFH number unique to each piece was added as part of Lladro's Assurance Program.

There are a few other additions to the Lladro mark that a collector might see on the base of a piece. These include circular marks indicating if the piece was a Collector's Society piece or an event figurine. An incised 3 inside a diamond has also been somewhere on the base of pieces issued since 1990.

Lladro Porcelain Finishes

  • 1Glazed - The first ad shows the high gloss finish that most people associate with Lladro figurines, and is the most popular with collectors.
  • 2Matte - The second ad shows a matte finish which is basically an unglazed finish either entirely in white (referred to as bisque) or unglazed painted porcelain. The matte finish produced unreliable sales so many of the figurines with the matte finish were retired in 1991. Only a few of the most popular figurines are still available in a choice of the matte or glazed finishes.
  • 3Gres - The third ad shows the Gres finish which is made of an entirely different type of porcelain that tends to resemble pottery or stoneware due to the terra toned pigments in the porcelain. Some Lladro figurines only come in Gres matte finish, but there are some made with the Gres porcelain that are also available in glazed finishes.

Lladro's Core Collections

Lladro made a number of series of figurines within its core collection. Here's a list of most of the various series:
  • 1Capricho - delicate, lacy, figurines produced from 1983-1991. They were finally retired because they were too easily damaged in shipping.
  • 2Elite Limited Editions - rather expensive pieces with great detail and multiple complex pieces issued in limited editions.
  • 3Goyescas - the figurines in this collection were named Goyescas in honor of the artist Goya who was their inspiration. The Lladro artist who produced these pieces was Enrique San Isidro. These are rarely seen in the secondary market and all limited editions have sold out.
  • 4Privilege Collection - this group replaced the Society group in 2001.
  • 5Lladro Society Members Only - For 15 years, Lladro produced select figurines that were strictly for its Society members. With the advent of internet auctions, these pieces have become readily available on the secondary market.
  • 6Special Theme Collection - this included a series of zodiac figurines with children in cone hats, robes and holding zodiac symbols. It also included a "days of the Week" series of both boys and girls figurines.
  • 7Black Legacy - a series of figurines focusing mostly on children of African-American lineage. The series was originally called "Black Heritage" but was changed to "Black Legacy" to be more politically correct.
  • 8Christmas Items - included nativity sets, tree toppers, ornaments, bells, balls and figurines
  • 9Gres collection - included figurines made with the special terra toned porcelain

Animal and Bird Figurines

Lladro Skye TerrierAnimal and bird lovers are bound to find a Lladro figurine to their liking. Not only did Lladro incorporate animals and birds in a large majority of their figurines, they often produced figurines just of the animals themselves. The most prolific choices are of cats and dogs, but they also made bears, horses, rabbits, ducks, chicks, bison, donkeys, swans, elephants, doves, cows, owls, turkeys, and other animals and birds.

Lladro figurines are indeed beautiful. I had a "Lladro-like" figurine given to me when I was little, but I don't think it was the real thing. I'd love to collect a few of my own!
