I Love Llamas

A LITTLE BACKGROUND ON LLAMAS

Llamas are members of the camel family and one of the oldest domesticated animals.

Fully grown, they average about 280 pounds and at birth weigh about 20. They are said to have originated on the plains of North American over 40 million years ago and migrated to South American about 3 million years ago. At last count (2007), there were over 7 million llamas and alpacas (a relative) in South American and due to importation in the late 20th century, about 100,000 in North America.

It is reported that they are as easily trained as a dog and can be housebroken without much trouble! I'm not sure I'd like to risk having a 280 pound llama running around my house though.

Having been bred for gentleness for more than 5,000 years, llamas are said to have amusing personalities and are very pleasant to be around. You may have heard of or seen a llama spitting but if properly trained, this is very rare. It seems as if too much socialization as a young llama makes them feel like they can treat humans like they treat each other when they are together which then does involve spitting, kicking and neck wrestling - all in good fun of course. They are very social and very curious animals and usually approach people easily.

Llamas are highly prized by the Andeans who live high in the Andes Mountains of Peru in South America. They are sure of foot pack animals that have been helping their owners carry their wares and move possessions for thousands of years. The llama's hair is used to weave beautiful caftans, scarves, sweaters, jackets and many other items, highly valued for softness and warmth.

People who own llamas come from almost every walk of life. If you are a llama owner, I think you're lucky.

Monet's Lily Pond Bridge with a Llama

Here is a llama inserted in one of Claude Monet's lily paintings. I've actually seen it called different things and the one I choose is "Lily Pond Bridge". If you love llamas, this is one of the favorites from my Masterpiece series and is available on a variety of products.

Whistler's Mother by James Whistler

Lonely No More

James Whistler painted his mother Anna and now it's a masterpiece. When it was first exhibited at the 104th Exhibition of the Royal Academy of Art in London (1872), it is reported to have come very close to being rejected. Look what time can do.

Mom looked a little bored before she got her llama, maybe even a little lonely. Well, lonely no more! A llama has definitely brought more joy into Mom's life, and now I hope yours as well. (I know it did mine.)

Here the design is shown on a women's black 100% cotton t-shirt, preshrunk, 5.6 oz, standard fit, durable and guaranteed.

The Llama Song from You Tube

OK, I admit this may be one of the dumbest songs, but my grand daugther who loves llamas, even memorized a good portion of it. Kinda get your blood moving if you happen to be in a stupor.
