Lobo - I've known him since I was a kid

Well, not personally. My parents had an album called "Calumet" by Lobo. No, I didn't like all the music my parents listened to but this was different. The more I listened to the songs the more I liked them. Not sure what it is, but they create a good feeling within me, even to this day.

I remember listening to the album (on a cassette tape) in the car on long distance trips which kept me from being bored. I pretty much like all the songs in that album, but there are two that are my favorites: "How can I Tell Her" and "Stoney."

The first has a really nice tune but unfortunately, the lyrics aren't positive or uplifting. It's about a man cheating on his wife/girlfriend. My wife commented on the irony of how such a nice sounding song could be about something so awful.

The second one though, is quite different. It also has a nice tune, and it's about a girl who really loves life and has a positive outlook on it (see below).

This singer and songwriter's real name is Roland Kent Lavoie (born in Tallahassee, Florida on July 31, 1943), and Lobo is his stage name which means wolf in Spanish. His biggest success was in the 1970s, and there's another song that I really like, titled "I'd Love You to Want Me" from his earlier album "Of a Simple Man." Actually, this song was Lobo's highest charting hit on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, where it spent two weeks at number 2 in November of 1972.

His popularity continued into the early 1980s with a few singles, including "I Don't Want To Want You", "Come Looking For Me" and "Living My Life Without You" charting in the country charts.

In the 1990s and 2000s Lobo became more popular in Asia. He recorded several albums in Taiwan and Singapore, one of which was "Asian Moon."

Stoney lyrics by Lobo

From the album "Calumet" - 1973

The character of the girl described in this song is inspiring to me.

~ Stoney ~ by Lobo

I've known her since we both were kids
I recall the silly things we did
She would want to ride upon my back
To keep from stepping on a crack

I didn't think of it back then
But even when she did not win
She was happy just to play
Stoney liked to live out every day

[Chorus]
Stoney, happy all the time
Stoney, life is summertime
The joy you find in living every day
Stoney, how I love your simple ways

The times when no one understood
Seems that Stoney always would
We'd walk for hours in the sand
She would always try and hold my hand

[Chorus]

Now, I don't recollect the time
I fell in love with this old friend of mine
Or when I first saw in her eyes
What she tried so not to hide

[Chorus] X3

Lobo's Calumet on CD

I waited a long time for this album to be released on CD since the cassette tape from my childhood days is no longer listenable.
