Lobster Trap Fishing and Shanty Feasting

Maine is our Favorite Travel Destination and Maine Lobster is our Favorite Maine Food
My husband and I always feel something drawing us northward to Maine when we plan our vacations, and were there again in September 2010. I don't know whether it's because I love lobster, which I do, or whether it's the many beautiful memories we have made as a family during camping trips to Maine, probably a mixture of both. When our children were growing up, we spent many a summer camping at Blackwoods Campground in Acadia National Park.
In my minds eye, I am sitting along a rocky coast, or looking out at the ocean off the rugged cliffs near the campground, watching the lobster boats as they go from trap to trap, checking to see if there are any lobster in them. Oh, there's one...a fisherman pulls up a trap, opens it, removes a lobster, measures, and throws it in the water...checks another...yes, this one will do...so adds it to the catch of the day. Then the traps are set again, and dropped into the water. I wonder, will one of those lobsters be my dinner at one of the many places in Maine to eat lobster.
The picture you see here was taken when we were on a late fall trip to Maine. The tourist season was over, great for hotel prices, not so great for finding a lobster dinner at some of our favorite summer spots. But as we were driving on our way home along the coast of Maine, we came upon this rugged country Maine restaurant, and some of the best hard-shell lobster we've ever had. It was worth the wait.
Enjoy the lobster fishing pictures in Maine and lobster recipes here. Putting this site together has been the next best thing to being there for me....a joyful journey.

Yellow Lobster in Rhode Island, a Rare Treat
Added August 1, 2010

I have to take us outside Maine for a bit to share a rare treat.
I don't think the lobster fisherman that found this rare lobster in Narragansett Bay in Rhode Island will be eating this fellow...or gal, and we may never see one again in our lifetime as the odds are about 1 in about 30million of catching one.
Denny Ingram is pictured holding his prize, and says that it will be kept at a coop of fishermen at the State Pier in Newport, RI.

Lobster Shack or Shanty Style Restaurant in Bar Harbor, Maine
We have eaten here a few times
You may think of a glamorous dinner out for two by candlelight when you think of a lobster dinner, but in Maine, some of the best lobster we've eaten have been in places like this, rustic, but nice. You'll find similar places all over Maine. It was fun to find this picture as it's a place we've been on more than a few occasions. We like to spend our time in the Acadia National Park area and Bar Harbor.
How to Cook a Live Lobster and Hard Shell vs Soft Shell Lobster
From Trap to Tank to Table
When you can't travel to Maine, the next best thing is to purchase live lobster either online (yes, you can do that!) or at a local fish market. Our supermarket sells them during certain times of the year. We seek out HARD SHELL lobster, soft shell lobsters have just shed their shells and haven't yet grown into them, so look bigger than the meat they contain. Cooking them is usually my husband's job, he knows how to do it quickly and efficiently so the lobster doesn't know what's hit him.
You're going to need a LARGE pot, these are sold as "Lobster Pots".
1. Fill the pot enough to cover the lobster(s)
2. Add Sea Salt to taste
3. Bring the water to a HARD boil, you want that water to be REALLY HOT!
4. Drop the lobster(s) in head first, and put on the lid.
5. Boil 10 minutes for a 1 lb lobster, and add a few minutes, about 3, for each additional pound in your pot (so know the total weight in the pot before cooking).
6. Remove the lobster with large tongs or other suitable kitchen utensil.
7. Drain well and serve HOT.
Your once green lobster will now be a brilliant red, and delicious.
The classic way to serve in the simple lobster shacks and restaurants in Maine is with a side of melted butter and corn on the cob, we do the same.
Essentials for Cooking and Eating Your Lobster
Lobster from the Store or At Your Door
Either way works for me!
Amazing, you can buy live lobster online now, and have it delivered to your door. Or you may be able to pick them up in your supermarket or a fish market in your area. Our supermarket sells them during certain seasons, and we have a large fish market not to far from us. Granted that buying lobster online can be a bit pricy, but it may be a luxury you can afford. You can search for lower priced live lobster or lobster tails through the link below.

You already know what I think, so I'll tell a little story. On our first trip to Maine, maybe 20 or so years ago, we were there with the mindset that lobster was only available at fine restaurants for LOTS of money. What a delightful surprise to find a roadside stand where a man was selling lobster and corn on the cob for $4 a meal, that you ate at a picnic table with a checkered tablecloth.

Maine may have good lobster, but there's also great lobster at....tell us where.

Not a chance! Eastern Prince Edward Island has the worlds best Lobster by far. Next in line would be South West Nova Scotian Lobster.
You can grab a feed early May - June months. A definate must try!

How to Make Lobster Bisque
Fancy or Simple
Though this picture shows a fancy dish served at a nice restaurant, Lobster Bisque is usually served quite simply in Maine, nothing fancy about it at all, except the taste.
Here's just one recipe, there are many variations...you can find more at cooks.com.
You need:
1 lobster, 1 to 2 lb.
2 ribs celery
1 shallot, minced
1 c. butter (1/2 lb.)
1 c. chopped onion (1 med.)
2 c. half and half (or milk)
Lobster broth
1 tsp. paprika
1/2 tsp. Old Bay Seasoning (optional)
1/2 to 1 c. sherry
1 tsp. concentrated chicken stock or 1 cube chicken bouillon
Salt, white pepper
1 c. flour
3 c. reserved lobster broth
1. Cook the lobster as we described earlier...only add the celery to the water before cooking.
2. Remove lobster, strain broth (let lobster cool), set aside.
3. In a large saucepan, melt butter, then sauté onion and shallot until soft and translucent. Add half and half plus some of the lobster broth, reserving 3 cups for later use.
4. Heat milk mixture thoroughly, then add paprika, sherry, chicken stock, Old Bay Seasoning, salt and pepper. In bowl, mix together the flour and reserved 3 cups of lobster broth. Heat until thickened.
5. Meanwhile, remove meat from lobster and add to the bisque. Allow bisque to simmer (do not boil) for 15 minutes, stirring occasionally.
6. Garnish each bowl with chopped parsley.
Variation: You can use 1 1/2 tablespoons Minor's Lobster Base instead of lobster broth; eliminate the chicken bouillon.
Variation 2: Instead of using lobster, use an equivalent amount of crab meat. Use Minor's Crab Base instead of lobster broth and chicken bouillon. Instead of Lobster Bisque, you'll now have Crab Bisque!
Variation 3: Instead of using lobster, use an equivalent amount of peeled, de-veined and chopped shrimp. Use Minor's Shrimp, Seafood, or Clam Base instead of lobster broth and chicken bouillon. Instead of Lobster Bisque, you'll now have Shrimp Bisque!
Makes 3 quarts.

Lobster Roll, Down Maine Style
How It's Made
This picture has my mouth watering!
To make it northeast style, simply take a top-slit hot dog roll, lightly toasted so it's just crisp, fill with lobster meat, hot or cold will work, your preference, and "season" with hot melted butter...the kind that you get as a side with a whole lobster. Just pour over the lobster lightly.
There are other variations on this recipe, but this one doesn't take away from the taste of the lobster.

The Maine Lobster Festival in Rockland
August 4-8, 2010
Each year the Maine Lobster Festival takes place in Rockland, Maine. In 2010, it runs from August 4-8th. For about $7 a ticket for the day you can enjoy the festivities which include entertainment, a seafood cooking contest, the Maine Sea Goddess Pageant, arts and crafts in the area, and even a footrace across partially submerged lobster crates/traps. A lobster dinner for two...with 2 lobsters...runs you about $26 total for both.

- Wow, this is a great lens on Maine lobsters. I love the colorful photos of the pots, and the recipes are an added bonus - my favorite is a baked stuffed lobster.
The yellow lobster is very interesting. I've seen a blue lobster before, but never one with a yellow shell. Nicely done!

- Beautiful! There's something very romantic about lobster shacks and lobster boats. I've never been to Maine, but we lived in Virginia for a long time and these sights and descriptions remind me so much of crab boats and fishing boats and eating crab around a table with a hole in the middle to toss the shells. Wonderful food, wonderful memories. I'll be nominating this beautiful lens for the Summer Sunshine award. Hope you win!
