Why Farmer's Markets are a Better Choice than Grocery Stores
Buy local, eat fresher, and eat healthier
Farmer's Markets have been in existence since we learned to grow vegetables in the first place. As long as we exist, the farmer's market will also exist. People are always going to crave and need fresh vegetables. Over the years, people have grown more and more accustomed to buying our food not from the people who grow it, but from grocery stores. In theory, grocery stores are a wonderfully convenient place to get everything that we need in our diet. However, with mass production of food and transport of food comes a giant loss of food quality. With that loss of quality comes a lack of nutrients, and the introduction of chemicals to keep vegetables "fresh."Local Farmers Markets are More Nutritious
At your local farmers market, the vegetables don't have to go far. In most cases, they go from the farm to the farm stand, or to the nearest town/city. When you purchase food from a grocery store, in most cases, it will be transported from the farm to a facility that will handle the long-term transport, possibly to a third party, and eventually to a grocery store. That's a lot of travel time. Think about how quickly veggies go bad once you pick them from your garden. They don't last long! How is that those grocery store vegetables last that entire ride from the farm to the grocery store, to you fridge? Those vegetables are picked prematurely, and not allowed to ripen fully. With every day that passes, the vegetables decompose more and lose much of their nutrition.
Riper Veggies=Better Nutrition
By purchasing from a local farm, the vegetables are allowed to ripen more fully than grocery store produce. Farmers also know what vegetables grow best in the local soil, so they optimize their farms for what naturally grows best. When produce tastes the best, it also contains the most nutrients.
The longer a veggie is transported, the less fresh it is. Buying local lets fruits and veggies ripen further on the stem, increasing their level of nutrition, and making them much tastier than varieties from further away.

- I love the Farmer's Market! It would be impossible to choose just one favorite, but I love black-eyed peas and corn on the cob. We also like to buy our honey there. The peaches are always "to die for" too and don't forget the watermelon. Oh, my, now I am really hungry :)
