Locals Know Best

Often times when people want to go to a new city, explore, or just take a road trip somewhere, they are looking for the best places to eat, stay and have fun. A problem though that they run into is normally the good stuff is in hiding, lurking where the average passerby wouldn't know where it is. Many a times the owners don't even make brochures for their services and are overlooked by the tourist. The reason for this is that they normally don't need the advertisement to make money because they are known locally as a great place to go too for food, clothing, shopping, or entertainment. However a tourist knows almost nothing about these places and they miss out on the great opportunity hiding a few blocks from their feet. This is where this project comes in to play. The focus for this lens is to document other lenses written by locals of a city to provide a tourist guide to where the great stuff is. Go on read the lenses find out about the cities you see, maybe even plan a trip and go to the places that are unveiled to you.

More about the Project.

This project is my idea on how to have some fun and get the word out to people about the best places to go to while they are on vacation. I feel like this is a great community project and can help tell the squidoo community more about the cities we live in. If you want to make a lens and get it featured on here just send me a message with your name, the city you wrote about, a short description of the city, and the link to your lens.

Flagstaff, Arizona

Ramkitten has written a really great lens about her city in Flagstaff, Arizona.

Here is her short description of the city: "Flagstaff is in the heart of the largest ponderosa pine forest in the world, at the base of the San Francisco Peaks. Those living at lower elevations, like Phoenix, come up to "Flag" to cool off in the summer. And when we in Flag want to warm up during the winter, we drive just an hour or two "down the hill" and peel off some of the layers."

Go check out her lens at: http://www.squidoo.com/flagstaff

Here is what Jennysue19 said about her home town: "I don't live in a city, just a little almost-seaside town on the South Coast of the UK - but there are inexpensive places to stay or eat or have a drink, and lots of places to visit nearby"

Sonora, CA

Nara has written a fantastic lens about her little city of Sonoma, California which is filled with a vast amount of rich history. I feel its a great lens and a great place to visit if your in the neighborhood anytime soon. Here is a little tidbit of the intro to her lens about what she thinks of her town:

"I'm Nara White Owl and I live in a small town with a lot of history. Here in Sonora, California a great deal of old history and new history being made.

Living in a small town is very peaceful and we do not have big shopping, but we have some great stores. After living in Southern California I have to tell you it is great to live in a small town like Sonora."

Brussels, Belgium

Prosperity66 has written a great quiz/lens on her home town of Brussels. Here is a little introduction to her quiz from her lens:
"I was born and raised in Brussels, Belgium. It's my Home Town. Unfortunately, Brussels underwent major changes during these last years, this is what urged me to leave.

However, I always loved this town and still do.

Brussels is a beautiful town, founded in the late 900; which means it's more than 1000 years old. The town hosts the most beautiful place in the world: the Grand Place and its marvelous King's House, Town Hall and other houses built over the centuries."

If you would like to take the quiz (which, I must say, is a lot of fun) you can find it by clicking the pretty blue letters to the right of the colon:http://www.squidoo.com/quiz-beauties-of-brussels-my-home-town

The alternatives...

If you really want a travel guide that covers some other great cities in the world I suggest you get one of these. The first one is a great book written by National Geographic. It has amazing pictures inside it and is really a steal. The second book is another great one that covers travel destinations from over 230 countries.

La verne, CA

Paperfacets has written a great lens about his home town in California along route 66. Here is what he had to say about his town:

"La Verne was an orange grove town along Route 66. It looks like a suburb now. Our family has enjoyed living here since 1984. The city has turned Route 66 into a shady tree lined thoroughfare. No more orange trees."
