Local Childrens Sporting Events Need Help in your area
I have a 6 year old daughter who started her 3rd year of girls softball this year. She absolutely loves the game and the people. Our local Dixie Softball league has always tried to keep costs down for parents. It's one of the lowest cost leagues in our county. They allow parents to pay installments if they can't afford the full price up front. I've even seen them waive a fee or two just so parents didn't have to tell their kids they couldn't afford to let them play. Those parents with fees waived volunteered in concessions and other areas to help make up the cost.

Participation drops in Groveport, Whitehall, Gahanna, Reynoldsburg
As a youth soccer coach in Groveport, Kyle Lund is always curious when one of his players drops off the team roster.
Sometimes, he'll bump into the parents at the grocery store.
"I say, 'I didn't see your kid,' and they say, 'Well, look at the price of this bread. It's doubled.' People are asking, 'Do we do this, or do we take piano?'" Lund said. "Typically, recreation is the first thing to go." - Fewer kids on field as fees rise | pnj.com | Pensacola News Journal

Enrollment is down in most Santa Rosa County sports leagues since the sports associations have increased their fees to cover thousands of dollars in electricity bills at the county parks where they play.
It's never too young to get your child into sports
Local childrens sports are important to every community. Kids need excercise and fresh air. They need the opportunity to learn about being a team player. The first two years my youngest daughter played, I was a bit skeptic. She spent a lot of the time in the outfield playing in the dirt, not really paying attention to what was going on. Of course, she was only 4 and 5 years old. But this year, she has really taken an interest and loves to play. It doesn't matter if it's practice or a game, she can't wait for the days to come. Local sporting leagues teach kids much more then what they can learn in school. And they get to have fun doing it.
Organized sports is very important for our children
For 5 to 12 year olds, winning doesn't matter
Kids in this age group would rather play for a losing team then sit on the bench of a winning team. They just want to have fun. Kids involved in organized sports receive much needed excercise. It enhances their self esteem and increases confidence. Organized sports teach teamwork, leadership and self-discipline. It encourages cooperation, teaches them how to share and handle stress. It teaches them how to handle competition and enhances social skills.
In todays world, all of these benefits will only enhance a childs life. Have you ever watched a child hit their first ball? Saw their face when they made that first catch or struck out their first batter? How happy were they when they made their first touchdown? They feel so proud of themselves and gain so much self confidence. Local childrens sports leagues are so important to children.

How parents help out the league...
In the past, all teams in our league had sponsors from local businesses to help fund the league. All teams are required to participate in a fund raiser to help raise money for the league and keep costs down. All parents are required to work in the concessin stand at least once during the season. But, this year, some of our teams don't have a sponsor. Hard economic times have hurt the local businesses. Enrollment is also down. Some of the age level teams didn't get enough players to form even two teams. Luckily, for us, we were able to team up with a neighboring city so those girls could actually play games instead of just practice.

How You Can Help
How can you help your local children's sports league? If you're reading this, you have access to the internet. Do a search for local children's sports leagues in your county or city. Most of them have a web site which includes a fundraising section. Buy one item or tell your friends, co-workers and family about it. Know a business that can afford a $200 to $300 donation? Let them know. Volunteers are also needed at a lot of the events. So, contact your local league and see how you can help.

- Great site!
I think with the recession in place, most people are so focused on the fear and reality of losing their jobs that they overlook how this impacts the children.
