Pietro Antonio Locatelli

Pietro Antonio Locatelli was a virtuoso violinist in the Baroque era and a composer. His music is currently the favorite of each and every classical music DJ at Sirius Satellite Radio to the point where those of us who knew nothing of this composer are fast becoming experts!

Locatelli was born in Italy and later moved to Amsterdam, where he stayed out his career. It is debated as to whether he was a student of Corelli or not - we do know he was a celebrated violinist, with an oddly long nose.

More on all this as this lens aims to take a look at the man and the music he created.

Pietro Locatelli - His Biography

An Unfortunate Artist's ImpressionPietro Antonio Locatelli was born in Bergamo, Italy in 1695. And while he is a composer of the most delightful music, he was actually better known in his time as virtuoso violin. Perhaps even the greatest of the Late Baroque Era.

He began playing the violin as a young boy at S. Maria Maggiore, Bergamo and was clearly recognized as a great talent. At the age of 16, in 1711, he was given leave in to travel to Rome, where he perhaps studied with Valentini (The author on Wikipedia claims it was with Corelli). he appeared often at S. Lorenzo in Damaso between 1717 and 1723; and was named virtuoso da camera at Mantua in 1725. Yet he was free to pursue other engagements, including performances at Venice (1725), Bavaria (1727), and Berlin and Kassel (1728).

In 1729 Locatelli moved to Amsterdam a major centre of European publishing, where he lived for the rest of his life, leading a group of amateur musicians and teaching. He released in 1721 a corrected version of his concerti grossi in 1729; two years later he received a 15-year exclusive privilege for the printing of his music in the Netherlands, renewing it in 1747; from 1741 he sold imported Italian violin strings as well.

Though his playing was highly praised, some observers found it too brilliant; likewise, the originality of his works was admired, while others criticized a lack of technique and invention. As a composer he focused on the sonata and concerto, achieving a fusion of sorts between the Roman and Venetian styles; his caprices for solo violin in L'arte del violino (Amsterdam, 1733) at one time earned him the title "Paganini of the 18th century."

Locatelli died in Amsterdam on March 30, 1764. An extensive art collection, along with a library featuring books on history, philosophy, and science in addition to music, testify to his breadth of learning.

Other Composers of the Late Baroque Era

Pietro Locatelli places in the Late Baroque Era

The first 40 years of the 18th Century was an extraordinary era of richly textured music mixed with lascivious, luxuriant art. You get the impression this was generally a good time to be alive. And yet, there was squalor of unimaginable proportions, short life expentancy and revolutions just around the corner!

In Europe, there were kings and queens in place for a long enough to suggest stability -- Queen Anne and then the House of Hanover (with George I and George II); France was reeling from Louis XIV and quietly getting used to Louis XV *; Germany had Charles VI and Russia had the end of Peter the Great, with brief interim of reign from his daughter Elizabeth before they rock and roll with Catherine The Great!

Relatively speaking then, a time of peace....

*My father had a whole load of Louis Quinze furniture that was hideously uncomfortable. Not to mention stupid-looking on the tiny Scottish island of Mull, where he lived with it.

Locatelli Played Live

To hear his music live, is to be able to close your eyes and imagine what it must have been like to hear it then. Perhaps he performed some of his own stuff?

We know he spent much of his time in Amsterdam with amateur musicians. Did he play with them to keep them in tune, on tempo, etc.?

The 10 Sonatas

Opus 8, written by Pietro Locatelli in 1744

While Locatelli wrote quite a bit of music, his library has been filed into 8 opus. (Opi?) This Opus 8 is the collection of his 10 trio sonatas for violin, cello and harpsichord.

That's what the site looks like and maybe if you're on Firefox in Italy you can listen to this 3 cd recording with impugnity!!

Baroque Dance

Which came first? The rhythmic symmetrical music or the orderly dances of the Late 17th, Early 18th Century?

Whichever, Baroque Dancing is its own genre of dance, and well worthy of study. One of the best places to study it, is apparently Covent Garden in London, where they even have social gatherings to display their proficiency! You can join Phillippa Waite on Monday evenings, Tuesdays and every so often on the weekends.

Baroque Christmas Music

No better to get into the seasonal spirit... if you like this kind of thing! My teenagers remind me all the time how square I am to LOVE Baroque music. I can't help it. My guess is I must have lived then. Why else would it speak to me on such a deep fundamental level?
