Wow, I have never heard of this before. I love trying new things for breakfast and will definitely give this a go. Thanks Susan!
  • JonTempleton May 30, 2012 @ 11:47 am | delete
This looks FANtastic! I wonder how it would be with venison?
  • scarlettohairy May 29, 2012 @ 3:52 pm | delete
I'd never heard of Loco Moco. It sounds like too much meat for my taste. Leave off the hamburger and I think I'd like it!
  • Susan52 May 29, 2012 @ 5:06 pm | delete
It'd still be awesome even without the hamburger!
  • casquid May 26, 2012 @ 7:10 pm | delete
Very interesting, and now I have to make it at home. Tasty!!!!
  • Millionairemomma May 24, 2012 @ 5:27 pm | delete
I ate this a lot, especially at Zippy's. Don't know Zippy's? Betcha do. This lens makes me homesick. You did a really wonderful job including the instructions and ingredients in clear detail. How did you get the image of the loco moco to appear like it is on a Polaroid photograph? Please click on my bio pic to respond. Thank you so much and aloha!
  • Susan52 May 29, 2012 @ 5:07 pm | delete
I used the Polaroid module in the Squidoo workshop for that picture.
  • xriotdotbiz May 22, 2012 @ 8:18 pm | delete
Always looking for local favorites, will try it the next time in Hawaii. Afraid if I made it I would not do it justice.
  • Susan52 May 22, 2012 @ 10:18 pm | delete
I've never had it in Hawaii, but when I make it at home it's fabulous. In fact, it's gained a spot on my "favorite comfort foods" list. Love it! If you do try it, let me know!
  • mercedes73 May 22, 2012 @ 6:03 am | delete
As a late breakfast at about 12 or so, I would love that!
  • kristalulabelle84 May 18, 2012 @ 1:27 am | delete

Susan, this sounds really good. I'd probably try it with chili (instead of gravy) and scramble my eggs. I sometimes add leftover rice to my scrambled eggs - tasty. Thanks for the great receipe and history lessson too!
  • Linda N. Mar 27, 2012 @ 5:34 pm | delete
Saw it on Hawaii Five-0. It looks interesting and I will try it! Aloha!

I saw that last night on Hawaii Five-0, too! Wondered if anyone would go looking for information and find it here. Glad you did, Linda N!

  • peterpberget Mar 19, 2012 @ 7:01 pm | delete
Beautiful, It reminds me of the "Cuban rice" I leaned to love as a child in the Caribbeans and still enjoy. Basically its a plate of rice topped with black bean stew and a fried egg, fried plantains on the side.
I live your recipe and I think its quite healthy, you want it richer just ad some cheese :)

I would probably get mine without the gravy, but the combination of eggs vs. beef vs. rice sounds great for breakfast. I might have a Pineapple or Orange juice with it to keep my palette in breakfast mode, but this is an interesting dish. #diggit!
  • JoshK47 Nov 8, 2011 @ 8:11 am | delete
Sounds tasty - I'm always up for trying new things, and this is certainly not the craziest thing I've looked at as far as food goes! Great lens. :)

This sounds like something I would really like. Call ME crazy, but I think I might add a dollop or two (or three) of sour cream on the top, though!
  • Susan52 Sep 5, 2011 @ 1:30 pm | delete
I love the idea of sour cream on top!

Brings back memories. We lived walking distance from Cafe 100 in Hilo back in the late 80s, early 90s. Used to be a miniature golf course there up until around '89 or '90 or thereabouts. The Loco Moco was often attributed to them, but you mentioned a way earlier date. Maybe a different restaurant or Cafe 100? Great Lens - love the pictures :-)

  • live-long-and-prosper Feb 13, 2011 @ 12:59 pm | delete
As a promotor for eating a hearty breakfast (much better for your health than going without) this looks like a good one. I would use brown rice and go easy on the gravy. I'll try this week
  • PeteSchultz Feb 10, 2011 @ 8:57 am | delete
I'm thinking it would be great with a breakfast sausage patty instead of hamburger, but I'd be more than happy to try the authentic dish, just ship me to Hawaii.

When I moved to Hawaii, the army put me up in a hotel for a month. The Hilo Hawaiian Hotel. They have a great restaurant. I disocvered this meal early in my stay, and ate it for dinner 3 to 5 times a week. I LOVED it. .... and I gained 20 pounds in 3 weeks. lol. really. Ah well, I still love a good loco moco.

It would be great for leftover hamburgers & great for supper as well as for breakfast.
Nice lens, Susan & thanks for featuring my Hawaiian lenses!
Blessed. I'm off to lensroll it to my Hawaiian lenses and to see how I can weave it into them as well.

How in the world have I missed out on Loco Moco? I've totally never heard of it -- that's what happens when you lead a sheltered life. This sounds like the 'breakfast of champions' -- how many calories did you say -- what's the nutrition facts?

Loco Moco looks delicious and I will definitely try it. I might try it with loose hamburger instead of a patty. I come from the land of Maid Rites ( a hamburger made with loose hamburger) and that sounds better to me. Thanks for the idea!
